xps out of build stage

For those of us waiting, can you post when your system makes it out of the "build" stage? That should give us a handle hopefully on when/if they've solved the GPU issue on our systems and start delivering again.

I've been in that stage for 7 days so far, and another has been there 10 days, so we know they're probably working on a fix...

Yea, I have a 9100 on order and its been in build for about that long too! Hopefully they are fixing the problem.

Ordered on 2/27/04 and still in build stage. It must be a big sucker.

For some reason I have two order numbers, and one of them has been shipped yesterday (I'm guessing that's the backpack or the mp3 player). But there have been some difficulties with the order, so maybe they just screwed up, and I'll be getting two laptops.

How do you guys see what part of the build stage the order's on? Cause the picture doesn't seem to change...

Edit: I ordered on March 9th.

Well Margo the web site seems to be stuck at "In Production" with no specifics checked, but if you call 1-800-433-9014 you can speak your order number to the automated system which indicates which portion of the process it currently resides in.
3/2/2004 Processing
3/2/2004 Pre-Prod
3/2/2004 Kitting
3/2/2004 Build ----> 11 Days in build and counting...

I called Dell to check the order status. 9 digit order number? Mine's 8 digits long. Well, I guess I'll just post here when I receive the laptop (or, even more likely, I'll join the lockup problem thread)

Margo,

If you ordered an accessory, like the remote control, it will ship ahead of the computer and have a separate order number.

I called to see what the holdup was in the 'build' stage, expecting that the person would just say they were tracking down the gpu issue. Instead the person said, that my CPU and battery was holding up the build. Obviously this couldn't be the case since it couldn't get past the 'kitting' stage without all the needed parts to build. The phone bot (even though it was a real person, a real stupid person) insisted that it didn't have all the parts. I read to her what the phases of production meant. In one ear, out the other, again insisted no cpu or battery.

Heh, I'll just be happy when I get it!

Take it with a grain of salt, but I've been all over Dell's rear over all the screw ups in my order (originally ordered Feb 22). The hold up is supposedly due to lack of screens, or at least that is what I have been told.

Just checked with Customer Service and my XPS is still in Production...the rep told me it was still in Kitting even though the phone status said "building" the other day! What gives?!? Ugh!

In Production since 3/2/04 and counting...

Yeah I ordered an 9100, the first time it got cancelled, but both orders where in the build stage from the day the order's where processed. And they haven't moved from there.

The holdup is likely the result of the lockup problem that appears to now be associated directly with Hyperthreading being enabled.
Add mine to the list of 9100s that have been stuck in the build phase for a week.

I wonder if the hold-up could be heat related issues. Both of the processors in the XPS systems use P4 northwood "C" processors, the 9100s are using P4 Prescott core processors. The prescott processors run hotter and consume more power without giving much of a performance boost over equally clocked Northwoods (example, a 3.2ghz Northwood core P4 and a 3.2ghz prescott core P4 perform pretty similar in benchmarking, but the prescott will run hotter and consume more power doing so). For a Notebook, where heat and power are big issues, it seems like Dell's choosing prescott over northwood may have been a bad design decision.

Well, hopefully the intense cooling in the 9100 will negate the heat problem... guess we'll find out soon enough.

Why would the delay be related to HT being enabled?

If that's the problem with the lockups, then it would be an issue with the app not being HT friendly. Unless of course it does work fine on a desktop machine with HT enabled. As I mentioned before I know that two of the apps I use can't be used at all with HT enabled, so I've either got to switch the bios regularly or upgrade them with an HT friendly alternative.

Now, if these games are HT friendly and they aren't working correctly in an XPS, that's another story.

The estimated ship date is on your order status page on the web, as well as quoted on the phone when you call for status.

No , I did not talk to a live person. I got it off the web site and from the automated telephone system. Most likely just a canned response.

It looks like there is trouble in paradise. From reading this board, my personal belief ( no proof ) is they have put them on hold trying to find a fix to the lockups. Even if you are a big company, it is not good for business to put out junk.

Well my system was supposed to be shipping today, March 15th. I just called Dell to get an update and the rep on the line put me on hold, came back and told me they anticipate it will ship in the next 2 to 3 business days. I mentioned I "knew" that the production of the XPS had been delayed due to a problem with the video cards, he confirmed that and said he was told they plan to resume shipments in 2 to 3 days. Who knows if that's true or not, but perhaps some of you other ppl out there waiting for your shipments can call in and try to get a "similar" answer? Just FYI for those patiently waiting as I...
