According to what he's been told there is a "worldwide production halt" on that part (obviously they haven't really solved the GPU problem or ATI can't produce good boards consistently). Well, if your system is "pushed through" and arrives with a defective GPU board, then you haven't been done any favors.
This could be the beginning of a major problem for ATI. They committed to a higher clocked part for Dell (an exclusive deal from what i've read). This means they'd have to have a dedicated manufacturing process (or dedicated speed bin for "high quality yields" destined JUST for dell). As far as I know, no other notebook company is getting the higher clocked part, and are getting the lower speed bin stuff instead (alienware, sager, etc).
I hope in the long run ATI can get Dell the higher quality GPUs they were promised. It would suck if ATI had to revert to a lower spec'd part because they couldn't keep yields high.
Memory is a problem too, since everyone uses crappy ole DDR (if nothing else, the Video Card industry should have moved to RDRAM long ago - they'd be ramping up for 3.2ghz XDR VRAM right now if they did). DDR manufacturers have ridiculously low standards, which compounds this problem.
