Sony or Thinkpad? Or something else altogether?

Hi all,

I am looking to get my husband a new laptop for Christmas and was looking for some opinions and advice. I have been considering the thinkpad and the vaio but can't decide. I need something that he can use to record, (he plays guitar and wants to record to his laptop) and this will be used instead of a desktop. He will be using an Omega Recording Studio with the laptop.

He refusese to ever own another Dell, so I am looking for something else. I am somewhat at a loss as Dell is all we use at work and all we have purchased at home so I know little to nothing about any other brands. We use a wireless network at home. I am leaning toward a T60p right now.

Thanks for any advice!

And feel free to tell me I am totally in the wrong place if I am!

No you´re not in the wrong place. To choose the right equipment is a task that has the odds to be well acomplished if you have your needs clear.

Until now, I haven´t seen the perfect " have it all " notebook; manufacturers are making market-segment oriented items. That said, I would reccomend without any doubt the Thinkpad T60 line if you´re looking for a sturdy, durable and well built machine that won´t let you down in any moment or place, nice built means all hardware performs without fail for long periods of use ... and abuse... You will get the best of the crop keyboard, including one of the finests trackpoints of the market. Excellent display and graphic performance... not for extreme gaming of course. As to the sound expect only a medium quality response. You´ll get permanent support and a software update system that will keep your machine with the latest Lenovo´s releases. Be patient in the buying and delivery process, it ussually isn´t as smooth as you´d like.

As to Sony, they are beautiful, have one of the best displays available, lot of multimedia options, but aren´t as sturdier and reliable as the Thinkpad... so you will have to decide...

As for my own experience I had to choose between a Vaio SZ series and a T60 Thinkpad, at the end I choose the later, and am very very satisfied with it, I was about to buy the Sony, luckily didn´t make it.

Thanks for the reply! I have been doing as much reading as possible and I narrowed it down to either the T60p or the Z61p. Size is not a priority as it is pretty much going to be a desktop replacement, so I am not concerned about weight.

I think I read somewhere that if you buy from the Lenova site you have 30 days to return, so I believe that is the way I will go. And they have an extra 512Mg free right now as well as free shipping. I have seen that they have the best keyboards around. I may have to get myself one when it is time to replace my Latitude.

You must read carefully the return policies, they have changed and now it´s not as easy as 30 days and no questions asked, they even will charge you some amount for returning the unit, and the package must be sealed... don´t understand well this, but you must be sure of your purchase better than thinking in returning if you´re not satisfied with it.
