Dell does not burn in before ship??

I seriously doubt Dell performs a bun in before shipping. Mine is already on the Truck. I guess I'll be running prime for a few days to shake it down....

Nope. They do run a bench check before shipping to make sure everything is operating properly.

I ordered my M1710 at about 3pm and within 24 hours it was in the couriers hands so I guess Dell don't do much testing before shipping.

With the quantity they sell it's just nearly impossible.

if u want them to do burn in's the cost of dell's would increase, it's just one of the ways why dell's are cheap!
Not to mention it would probably snowball into long delays for customer shipments. Especially if they're having to re-build a system because it didn't make it through burn-in. This would add to costs and then everyone would be whining why it takes 4 weeks for their system to get to them.

Ah, so that's why my fan went out less than two months after buying my E1705...

Now I have a retaliation when I tell someone about my fan and they say "Your computer had problems right after you got it? Dell sucks!"

And then there's those who have just heard Dell sucks so I tell them it's a Dell and they cringe and ask "Why didn't you get a [Lenovo/HP/Toshiba/Sony/Gateway/whatever]?"
Lenovo is expensive, Sony is more expensive, Toshiba doesn't have what I want, Gateway is cheap, HP didn't have a good graphics card in its dv9000t (which would have been my second choice). Dell wins.

When people tell me Dell sucks, I just say "OK" and walk away. Until they actually experience Dell quality, then why even waste your breath arguing with them.

I think that example is pretty bad. Dell wouldnt burn-in durring 2 months. Anyway I think with Dell's warranty there is no point and doing burn-ins. If you have a problem just have dell replace the part.

So how long of a burn in would be suitable?
In your case even if they did a one day burn in it still wouldnt of been caught.
Most people have to realize that electronics can and so sometimes goes bad, its not like Dell actually makes that component.
Heck, I have my i9300 on 24/7 since December of 05 and not a single problem.

I'm not sure for how long the fan had been having problems though. It didn't seem to be having noticeable problems until less than two months after, but I think I remember it always failing diagnostics. If they had the fan running at its highest speed for 10 minutes or so, I'm sure the problem would have been found. Anyway, it was resolved, so whatever. Burn-in or not, I have my 4-year CompleteCare with accident protection, and the fan was fixed in less than 48 hours from contacting Dell, by a technician that came to my house.

My 8600 runs 24x7 and is three years old. No issues. I dont baby it at all. I put plates on it and eat on it at times. splashing specks of sauce and stuff on the screen which I wipe down with a wet rag now and then. I have travelled with it extensively. It rocks on. My wifes 10 year old Compaq burned out and we chucked it. No more Compaqs for us. It was only a $600 notebook but it should have lasted more then a year.

I bought the 1705 for the power not because my 8600 is finished. I now have two laptops I spent less then $2500 for. Thats why I buy Dell and not Alienware or Sasger and the other nicer better built brands. Usually if they last a year running hard, they will last awhile.

I will burn in the 1705 as it will be on 24/7 as well and running prime and the FS Demo for the first few days.

So you hung onto a burned out Compaq for 9 years before you chucked it?

Well i do own a dell... but just because I paid $3500 for one doesnt mean i have to pretend dell has quality.

My system is great and performs well, but i wouldn't rate it with any terms such as 'high quality'.

I could make a civic out perform a diablo, and spend less overall... but the diablo is still higher quality. (including parts, manufacturing and customer service)

So which make do you consider a "Diablo of Notebooks"?

There's your mistake. $3500 for a notebook that will be relevant for maybe three years.I would not spend that much on any Dell computer......I paid $1498 for mine and it runs everything well.

ZDell has low prices and enough quality to get the job done for at least three to five years. With all they sell I would imagine if quality was an issue it would be a national cry.

They don't do any checking at all; when my Dell laptop arrived, and I turned it on, spoolsv.exe and csrss.exe were between themselves consuming 60% CPU usage of one of the two cores. Both these processes should be using 0%, not 30% of my overall CPU power.

Of course, this means I have to re-install, but it also means that Dell doesn't do even basic checking before shipping the systems out. It's probably a question of "Does it boot? Yes? Ship!".
