Acer LCD hinge broken

The iron hinge on the left side of my LCD screen is broken in half :s

The last couple of months, I noticed my screen didn't open as smoothly as it dit before.
Just now, I heared a *crack* and saw that the plastic cover over that hinge came loose, and saw the hinge moving inside !

I took of the front panel, above my keyboard, and was horrified to find this:

talk about "metal fatigue" -or- "acer rubbish" ...... This laptop is 2 years old! (meaning: no more warranty)

- Can I fix this myself?
- How much would it cost if I let Acer Support fix this? (I only have negative experiences with those guys)
- Can I ask Acer to just send me the hinge? (still have to find out how to detach the part of the hinge that's stuck to my screen...)

RIDICULOUS

It looks like you have a 2025. Believe it or not, the EXACT same thing happened to mine about a month ago (about the 2 yr anniversary as well).

The screen stopped opening up as smoothly, and then one day I try and close it and hear a snap - mine is the right back hinge that popped out. Sad because I really like the laptop (think the features have generally held up well after 2 years).

I reached out to tech support, and I think they quoted me a 700ish flat fee to look at anything. I'm debating whether to fix or just buy a new laptop (was planning on getting a new one relatively soon anyway).

Very annoying. Let me know what you decide to do.

700ish what? $$ ???

oh my god...

Well, I just opened up just about everything on my LCD screen, to see how that hinge was connected to the panel. It was fixed to the frame around the LCD, with some kind of "unscrewable pins", besides 2 regular screws (:?).
I tried applying some oil, to no avail.

I finally wriggled the damn thing of the lcd-frame.
Now my screen rests on the only working hinge left, but I can close and open the panel without a problem, even with that little plastic lid above the keyboard installed (the hinge would pop it open).

Now it's a matter of opening the lcd-lid carefully by the right side, and let it stand near-vertical, otherwise, it would drop completely.

... and hoping the other hinge stands its ground....

Definitely a combo of bad design and poor material selection on Acer's part.

On the other hand, it's a simple mechanical break. You can probably engineer a fix for it. Or find a friend that is handy with metal, drills, and screws.

I certainly wouldn't pay $700 to fix something like that. And if you like the laptop, it's a waste to give up on it. Just "engineer" a solution.

Hi guys.. just came across this thread searching for a solution for the hinge f my acre 2001 laptop that just broke the same way...it is also 2 years old...what a coincidence.
it is definetely a common problem.
I dissassemdeled the lid and got out the rt that broke...i tried to fix it using epoxy glue...waiting for it to dry right now butdo not think it will hold..i found the necessary part here:

Epoxy should hold for about 1 day. Not enough surface area for glue to work.
