JMAN's nc6000 first impressions: benchmarks and photos to come =)

Just got this baby today. I'm downloading 3DMark 2001 SE from a wireless internet connection coming from an office building 200 feet away!

Build Quality:

Amazing, compared to Dell's latitude 600m, this machine is indestrcutable. The screen casing is made of magnesium alloy and is very strong. The rest of the machine is made of lightwheight plastic that is surprisingly strong. It blows away any dell I have ever used.

Performance:

Haven't run any benchmarks or apps yet, but it is very fast running windows.

PCMark 2002 Results (errors while running?)
CPU: 4549
Memory: 4783
HD: 639

Screen:

The 14.1 inch SXGA+ screen was certainly worth the wait. It is beautiful.

Weight:

This thing is light, without the battery and optical drive, it is below 5 pounds.

Noise:

Fans come on when it first turns on, they are fairly quite. When its running, a you can barely hear a small fan running in the backround.

Anything I left out?

Benchmarks should come soon. 3Dmark 2001 by the end of today, 3dmark 03 by tommorrow.

I know. I'm stuck in Boston for a few more days. When I get home, I'll take some pics.

What is the core/mem speed of the vpu clocked at?
if you happen to have a port replicator and 1600x1200 external LCD monitor, i'd love to have confirmation that the nc6000 can do 1600x1200 thru DVI and switch from the 1600x1200 DVI to the internal 1400x1050 LCD and back again without requiring a reboot.

i emailed HP, and they claim this will all work, but i never put much confidence in vendor pre-sales tech support. hearing that an actual user has done it successfully carries more weight with me.

Please also do a PCMARK2002 benchmark too.

OK, one thing at a time. My hotel charges $10 a day for DSL so I'm running of an EXTREMELY far away wireless router. Don't expect a lot of benchmarks until at least Wed. I'll try to get PCMark and 3DMark. As for the DVI and ort replicator, I don't have the replicator sorry. I will look up my VPU core speed in a minute.

VPU is clocked at 195 MHz memory, 250 MHz core. I can overclock the core easily to 300 MHz, what are the default values for the Radeon 9600?
Anything under 333MHz for the core is considered non-pro, i think ATi lets each manufact. determine what they want to set the core/mem speed at. So from your info it looks like the M10 in the nc6000 is a bit on the slowpoke side. That kinda sucks because i was really considering this lappy, and i'd prefer not to oc a vpu on a lappy. Hope you get some good benchmarks...

Yeah, thats a big complaint with this laptop, the slowish GPU. I haven't benchmarked it yet, but it certainly performs well in Halo. It is really a very nice computer for what I want to use it for, everything (school, gaming, modding, v editing...)!

Overclocking the GPU in this thing is easy. It runs at 350 MHz core easily. The manufacturer sets the speed in the Bios, correct? if thats true, than the nc6000 has no hardware defficiency, just use RAD Linker to change the clock setting in the BIOS.

Sounds great Jmans..... When did you order this rig? Just wondering how long the build time was as apparently mine hasn't even been assembled yet. Though it is hard to tell with the HP site. It doesn't say much at all. Anyway, glad you like your new HP!

First let me mention why mine took so long to arrive. I special ordered the 14.1 SXGA+ screen which was backordered. The screens were so hard to get that it took HP a month to get them. Once they got the screen in though, it only took them 2 days to put it together and ship it out. If your computer takes too long because of a part (A/B/G wireless card?), complain about them not mentioning the backorder and ask to be put on priority. I have no idea what the difference between a normal and priority order is, but thats what they did for me and I got my computer in record time once the part was received. Call up your sales rep and try to find out when the cards will come in. Good luck with your order.

After all that, I never told you how long it toog . I ordered on February 16 and it shippped on March 8.

Jmans..... I emailed my salesman 2 days ago wondering about my order status. He hasn't gotten back to me yet. But I did notice some changes in my order on the link you gave me (thanks again btw). In the last 2 days *apparently* all the backordered parts came in and now it is in the "build" stage. It was checked in today for configuration and seeing how it is now the weekend I assume it will just sit there for 2 or 3 more days. I now will feel lucky if I get this rig by next friday. Ohh well, waiting is supposed to be half the fun, right?

Depending on your order priority (once again, I don't know how this works), they might build it over the weekend. They started building mine on Sunday and shipped it out Monday.
^^^^ Well, they are working on it over the weekend it seems! As of this morning (saturday 3/13/04) it is in the "staging (preparation process). That means they are *starting* to build it I guess. But it is good to see progress being made! I now have my "customer #" memorized because I check the status so often! Hopefully this thing ships monday and I will see it by Wednesday or Thursday. Updates forthcoming....

Awesome. I finally got home, so now I can download the benchmarks at a rate faster than 16 KBs.

are you still around, ever get to the benches?

yeah, I'm still here. My internet connection randomly times out and its taking forever, please be patient.
