JMAN's nc6000 first impressions: benchmarks and photos to come =) - Page 2

Just wondering if the nc6000 comes with 32 or 64mb GPU? I could have sworn when I last configured it there was a 64mb option but now it appears only 32 is available. Either way I think this is the laptop for me (my other choice was sony Z1). I look forward to the pics.

It comes with both. If you order it directly from HP and select the "configurable" model, a 64 mb GPU is an option. I did this and mine does have the 64 mb GPU. 3DMark should finish downloading in 10 minutes and I'll bench it at normal and overclocked speeds.

OK, I have the 3dMark 2003 scores for the default clock speed and difference overclocked combinations. I believe the test was running at XGA.

(core speed/mem speed)

Default (250/200)
1591 3dMarks ( )

(300/200)
1688 3DMarks

(300/230)
1874 3DMarks

(330/250)
2063 3DMarks

(330/275)
2151 3DMarks

I beleive that my slower 1.4 GHz processor is partly to be blamed for my sub-average scores, but it seems HP made this computer shoot itself in the foot to save battery life by underclocking it. According to my HP system utility, the D.A.C. is rated at 350 Mhz, so I don't believe that I have sub-standard hardware, just poorly clocked hardware. When Dothan comes out, I will upgrade to the 1.8 GHz procesor. Also, although these scores are below the average r9600 scores, they are 50% faster than M9 scores (radeon 9100/9200) so I have something to brag about as no computer this size gets 2500 3dMarks (Z2 is larger).

Can you please do the 3Dmark2001 scores too ???

Yeah, I'll try to get the file overnight. It could possibly take a few days though.

Just a quick question, how is the build quality of the keyboard? i really hate mushy/springy keyboards. i hope this isn't the case with the nc6000.

The keyboard is very firm, not mushy or spriny and I have not noticed any flex in it at all. This computer seems to be everything I wanted. With the exception of the lower 3DMark scores, I love this computer.

I just checked Hpshopping.com and I could not find neither 64mb GPU and SXGA+ units.
Did you guys place order it from HP?

Action, to get an idea of what the keyboard is like, try out the pavillion notebook's keyboards and the HP nc6000 keyboard is very similar, just a little firmer (is that even a word?).

Cool, thanx jman. You have been very helpful.

Hi mercutio11,

Yes, I ordered mine from HP.
If you go to this page

http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/cto...D=19701&SBLID=

the last example is configurable. Click on "customize" and both the 64 mg and sxga+ are options.

Just ordered mine... estimated ship date is April 10th... I sure hope it ships sooner than that.

Howdy SyntaxError,
Looks like we're in about the same boat, time frame-wise.
My estimated ship date is 4-9-2004.
Let's keep our fingers crossed that it'll be sooner than later.
And congratulations on a fine choice!

Did you guys order the SXGA+ screen? If you did they are hard to get ( I had to wait a month for mine) and that probably explains your long wait. IMO it is worth it, I'll try to get some pics and such today, but no promises.
jmanjohns, yes I got the SXGA screen, actually, you posted in my thread, so I guess you know that.
Yep, I got the SXGA+ screen, too.
I'm wondering how is quality of the screen (such as brightness, contrast, and etc.).
Is there any noise (high pitch sound) and any heating problems?
I'm looking forward to see the pictures and full review of this laptop.
Thanks jman. =)
