can somebody explain why 17 inch laptop display is able to use 1920x1200 resolution..and be only 17 inch

while for LCD monitors, in order to get 1920x1200 resolution, you would need to get at least 23 inch monitor?

Are LCD's and laptop displays different?
Why is the 17 inch be able to display the same thing which only 23+ inch moitor can?

Cause i am in the market of buying a 19 or 20 inch display, and when i looked at resolutions, most of them were only 1280x1024 (1440x900 for widescreens)
How can a gigantic 20 inch monitor only display 1280x1024 resultion?

Probably grading and pricing. The LCDs in a desktop monitor are cheaper and probably not as advanced at what you'd find in a laptop. That's why you can get a full 19" display for under $250. You also don't see glossy screens on desktop monitors.

desktop & notebook LCDs aren't really that different. The resolution is not actually very related to the size of the screen. Instead, it's a function of how close together the pixels are. Since some notebook users want higher resolution screens, the LCD manufacturers have made some in which the pixels are very close together. However, for desktop users, they are not constrained by space, so the higher-res monitors are usually physically larger so the LCD manufacturers don't feel they need to put as many pixels so close together. This is also why high res notebook LCD panels are often 1/3 the price of the unit.
