Windows Updates

Hi,
I have an Acer 3610 laptop (about 6 months old) and have recently installed a router so I am using broadband from our main computer. I have just realized that the laptop has never had any windows updates, and when I tried to install them I get this message: FILES REQUIRED TO USE WINDOWS UPDATE ARE NO LONGER REGISTERED OR INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER, then there is a option which says REGISTER OR REINSTALL THE FILES FOR ME NOW. I tick this, then get back round to the screen which tells you to download and install the updates. Same thing happens every time, going round in circles. Automatic updates are enabled, I have checked that. The time passes when it should happen, then zilch.
Could someone please tell me what is going on here, and is there a solution to this.
Thanks.

u can either try to re.register some dll files using "regsvr32" command from start->run
wait for the message stating that it is successful before going on to the next DLL
· regsvr32 wuapi.dll
· regsvr32 wups.dll
· regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
· regsvr32 wucltui.dll
· regsvr32 atl.dll
· regsvr32 msxml3.dll

or p.u. the stand-alone installer from Microsoft at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=43264
and then
from Start > Run type in "WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce"

cheers ...

Have you checked to see if the router has a 'firewall' encorporated ? Most do so may be well worth reading the router user manual (RTFM).

Thanx to both of you for replying, to QHN, I will try what you suggested and re-register these files.
Dave-Clan-Man, the router does has a firewall enabled, but it doesnt stop the main computer from downloading updates, so would it stop the laptop? I have read the Belkin manual but it only recommends leaving the firewall on. Do you think this could be causing the laptop not to download these updates?
Thanks again.

I have a Belkin wireless router which works just fine to both my laptop and desktop machine(no problem with XP updates). If as you originaly said problem started after you installed the router I suggest you still look in that direction. Do you have a firewall on the laptop enabled ?.

To QHN, I have re-registered the DLL's and it is updating fine now. Thanks so much for that. I also found out the Background Intelligent Transfer Service was stopped, must have been like that when I bought the laptop as I have never heard of this. I started this service, but it wouldnt use the windows update until I re-registered the DLL's.
Thnx again for your help.
Sara.
