Faulty (replacement) m7700 mobo

Updating the previous thread (http://www.notebookforums.com/thread181485.html)
since I've got new info... still no word out of AW about what can / will be done about the problem. I love the machine, but it's been so much trouble (Four trips to the depot under warranty in the first 6 months) and now that it's off warranty, I'm looking at replacing a broken mobo that AW changed out just over a year ago
Suffice to say, I will NOT be a return customer if this can't be resolved to satisfaction. I've given AW and their rep the benefit of the doubt til now... time to see if it's deserved.

EDIT- my depot invoice lists the replacement mobo as 5.3 so definately checking up on Isaac-Link's suggestion

Well... AW is willing to take it in for repairs provided I pay for 2 hours labor for diagnosis (on a problem where I know the cause) and then quote me a price on the fix. Looking like there's no reason not to let the hardware guy I know through a friend have a go at resoldering the HDD chip. Another option that's been brought up is getting an external USB HD and booting off that. Should be possible since USB is actually first in the bios... anyone ever tried this??

hmm i guess you can try to resolder the hdd controller of course this could end up complete damaging the controller or getting a new mobo from RJtech, or paying AW to have it replace, wich is around $500.

that options on the USB should be fine too just expect slow loading times on almost eveyrthing since USB doesnt have the same transfer rate as SATA or IDE

Thanks for the lead on rjtech... if it's way too slow off the usb I'll probably try installing a new mobo (which actually doesn't look as hard as I thought it might). just need to image my old drive over before trying.
