so does that means the dx version thats in this pre release is what we'll see when vista comes out. So then, is there an advantage from a gaming point of view to upgrade to this now or shud I stick with XP?

VISTA is out!!!!!!!! RTM is the final release, we are running it. I'm not sure why you think it's pre-release.

To answer your question, there is no gaming advantage to Vista right now, especially in laptops.

Here is a link to a patched and working Bluetooth driver stack. I am currently using this on my M90 running Vist RTM X86. Follow the driections.

http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/show...=291473&page=6

Follow the directions from the website link. Then perform the below 2 steps.

1. After installing to ensure the driver for the Bluetooth 350 was correct, You go to
Control Panel/Bluetooth Devices/Select Hardware
Click the Bluetooth 350(in my case that was teh bluetooth I have)
Manually update the driver, point the installer to C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\bin
find teh file you need for your card. (for I used the name of the driver it was searchibg for, the name will show up in the file name box below) Rebbot
2. After you reboot enable your bluetooth FN+F2, right click the bluetooth icon in your task bar. Select start using bluetooth. You may have to reboot again and voila a working bluetooth stack.

If you are connecting Bluetooth Headphones and you lose all Sound go to the sound properties and select your speakers as default again. I paired my HT820 headphones and it select those as my default. After switching it back I have had no troubles.

Hope this helps some of you out.

True.. Vista Business was announced and out on November 30th and is able to be licensed. We have Keys for it where I work so I am using it. As soon as the keys for Ultimate are released I will be doing an upgrade but they will not be out until January 30th so there is no way to license or upgrade to Ultimate until then. Anyone who is running a version besides Business or Enterprise there are no fully licensable keys out yet and only 180 Day MSDN Keys. Unless your not doing things legally

The MSDN keys are full keys. Where did you get the information about 180 day keys?

sry for my ignorance!
so is there any point in upgrading to vista or even buying a 64bit processor yet then? What should we be waitin for

If you game there is no point in upgrading to Vista or a 64 bit processor until DX 10 video cards come out for lappys.

DX10 allows for some amazing graphics so you'll definately want to then. Just look at the Crysis DX10 screen shots, friggen amazing!

Just from installing it and not being able to activate. Digging thru the information on the MSDN site there was a note saying that the keys were only good for 180 Days.

If it's only 180 days for now that fine, Vista has a change key function so plugging in a new key shouldn't be a prolem. In theory.

Just check my Vista Ultimate from MSDN and it's activated. I don't remember activating it either.
but if we're going to assume that there won't be DX10 cards that fit into the m1710, then in terms of gaming, theres no point in switching to Vista at all. How bout when crysis comes out though, will it be advantageous to play it on XP DX9 or Vista with DX10 emulated

Jeff, when you go through the installation process there is a check box that is automatically selected to Activate on startup.

You can also check using "winver" in the run command for the expiration date. I am using my MSDN supplied key and I have no expiration date.

Or unless you were a Vista beta tester, and got a free full version of Ultimate

There is no DX10 emulated. If you want to run the DX10 version of Crysis you will need to have a DX10 video card. Otherwise you'll need to run the DX9 version on vista.

Thanks. Mine doesn't list an expiration date as well. I'm not sure where he found the 180 day thing.

yes thats what i meant, im askin though if there will be any advantage to playing the DX9 version on vista vs playing it on XP? Doesn't Vista use DX9L if you dont have a DX10 card?

Yes, it uses DX9L. And DX9 games will run a little slower on Vista compared to XP or at least those are the reports I've been reading. Now keep in mind most vista video drivers are beta or just plain crappy right now, so that might improve over the next few months.

mmm so basically unless the m1710 supports a DX10 card, no reason for me to get vista, guess i can cross that off my list

I think the odds of getting a pop in DX10 card for the existing M1710 is extremely low.

If you are serious gamer be happy with XP on your 1710. If you absolutely have to play Crysis or any other DX10 game come the new year, you'll likely have to upgrade to a whole new laptop and start running Vista.
