My first 5750 shutdown.

Hi y'all. I have a M5750 thats about 1.5 months old now. A week after I got it, I suffered a random shutdown and it wouldnt boot up, turns out that was due to a faulty RAM slot and it was fixed. Now its been rock solid ever since I got it back. However about 15 minutes ago, I was playing a game and suddenly BOOM random shutdown. Ive played more intensive games for far longer so I dont know why it would have done this under the load it was operating (which was only Neverwinter Nights) Luckily it started up again fine. Now I would like to know what caused this, I have a laptop cooler under my laptop so I would hope that it is running cool enough. However can anyone recommend a good heat monitoring program/software for this machine so I could monitor the temps?
I really really hope this shutdown was a one off, but I want to check out the possible causes.

There could be so many reasons why you may have experienced a shut down - some that have nothing to do with computer hardware problems - it's not necessarily a heat thing or even something to worry about. I would see if it does it again.
Post how much memory you have and whether it is Alienware installed or self installed.
In the meantime, you can run memtest86+ @ www.memtest.org for a couple of hours to rule out a mem problem.
My m5750 setup acted screwy using some of the popular monitor apps - maybe some else can help you with this. I use PC Wizard 2006 (www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php) to check my temps. It won't monitor, but it tells you the latest temps when you refresh. Open it up first and run CPU Burn-in (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...U-Burnin.shtml). Press the refresh button to get temp readings.

Well I had another shutdown while playing BF2 tonight. I suspect it may be due to overheating. I have a lapcool 4, however I dont think its doing a good enough job. I would like to hear from other 5750 users about how they keep their systems cool under load. I notice the area under the right palmrest becomes very warm, I think that is where the graphics card is located yes?

I do not use an m5750 but an m9700. I played many, many games on it since I opened the box just a few days ago. Surprisingly, my notebook experienced a complete sudden shutdown when playing BF2. Only happened with BF2 and only once. Also, just the game itself had quit once during gameplay, without any error report, like I had manually shut it down. On top of that, every time I reboot my PC after having played BF2, there's times that it will just keep the screen dark and I need to reboot again to use my computer again.

My GPU's dont exceed 79C when playing BF2, and the palmrests weren't hot at all. The screen looked perfect, no artifacts, nothing. Then just *bam*, black screen. Last logged temp at that point was 78C. (nvTempLogger).

To me it seems that BF2 is very buggy on this regard, at least on notebooks. It scared the hell out of me when my brand new notebook shut down on me, but i have not experienced a single problem with any other game, that I played a lot more than BF2. BF2 is a new suprise every time I run it. I wouldn't worry about your notebook.

Ok, Im really quite worried now, I just had my laptop shut down on me again in the middle of dawn of war. Thats a shutdown in 3 separate games, BF2 Neverwinter Nights and Dawn Of War. I have no way of monitoring my graphics card heat, but I know my cpu gets up to around 75 degrees. What the hell am I supposed to do to solve this problem? I spent ages repositioning my laptop so the cooler pad fans are aimed more or less right at the intakes for the GPU. I cant think of anything else, and it seems like im at the mercy of random shutdowns due to overheating. Please can somebody suggest a solution?

you really should find a way to monitor the temps of the gpu. if it turns out to be OK, give AW Steve a call.
have you try NVTEMPLOGGER i use this to monitor the temps on my m9700 just run a google search for it
post #9 of 22
nVTempLogger is for nVidia based GPU's the 5750 has an x1800
post #10 of 22
lol got confused :P

my sys has a m5550 it originally had an ATI i was never able to get any temps readings.

i ended up getting an Nvidia 7600 after the ATI died
post #11 of 22
hmmm... so that means u had an x1400 originally? nice to see they don't mind throwing in a superior gpu I had ordered two 80GB drives in my m9700 and received two 100GB discs for some trouble during ordering
post #12 of 22
thats great, yeah ive seen that with the HDD's beeing upgraded its bassically because the 60 and 80hdd are end of life already so its cheaper to upgrade people to 100 then actualling ordering new 60 and 80.

for them to change teh Video card wasnt really ease it took a CIT agent to be able to upgrade it but at the end me and my sis are very happy with it,

This is the thing, I cant find any way to monitor the X1800 temps. Reading around a bit I found that if it reaches 80 degrees it shuts down, and when my system is under load the cpu readings reach the high 70's so I can only surmise that the video card is indeed getting too hot, reaching 80 and shutting off. All of my efforts at raising the laptop up, repositioning the Lapcool 4 i got for it dont seem to do enough to keep the temps down when its under load. Im out of ideas

Perhaps RivaTuner and this:

I was going to suggest rivatuner...

Ok just got Rivatuner, heres the funny thing. Ive already tried this program actually, and upon further examination it said that I would need to revert to older drivers to use the temp monitoring function. However I have learned that Alienware - approved drivers seem to be something of a mish-mash. I tried using drivers from ATI's site, but they wouldnt let me install, and searching on Alienwares drivers section didnt turn up anything useful. Indeed their current driver set appears to be a little out of date last time I looked. How could I deal with this?

From the day I first got my Superman m5750 in August, I experienced the random restarts. Alienware insisted it was faulty RAM. So of course I had to pay them to send out new sticks (and I'd be refunded when they got the "faulty" ones back--which I wasn't. I had to hound them to credit my account.). Alienware first sent me 2 1GB sticks of the wrong size, then replaced those with 2 512MB sticks of the correct size (to this day, I am waiting for my $375 credit for the memory RMA).

Luckily I found this forum, because never once did Alienware tech support (which I spoke to 20+ times) mention that the REAL problem/solution was the bios upgrade to 1.15. This morning I updated the bios and have not had any random restarts (I was having one every 5-10 minutes when running on battery power, none on a/c).

System Shutdown

I have a m5750 system about 2 months old, as configured below:
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7600 2.33GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2
Display: Alienware® m5750 17" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD - Saucer Silver
Motherboard: Alienware® Intel® 945PM + ICH7 Chipset
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 1024MB
System Drive: Extreme Performance (RAID 0) - 160GB (80GB x 2) Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache
Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/Software
Video/Graphics Card: 256MB ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1800
Sound Card: Intel® 7.1 High-Definition Audio
Wireless Network Card: Internal Intel® PRO Wireless 3945 a/b/g Mini-Card
Communications: Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet & 56K V.92 Modem
===================================================
I run this system at my business from 6:30am - 4-5pm M-F. The system never has shut off from overheating, The laptop is only open 1" as I run an external monitor and have the laptop stuck under a monitor riser, so I'm sure my airflow is not as good as full open, I do not use a laptop cooler.
For monitering I use notebook hardware control - my temps run CPU ~60, HD ~44, it does not show the ATI Video temp. I have had two blue screens of death, but I chaulk it up to various software or hardware periferals I'm running.

Ive decided to slightly underclock my GPU in the hopes that it will reduce the heat from the card. However I now seem to have random shutdown issues when im not at my computer, frequently I leave it on overnight and when I wake up its shut down, this morning I tried to start it up twice and encountered some sort of screen corruption when I got to the desktop, the whole screen turned blank and nothing would respond, took a couple of restarts to get it working again. I've tried to check that there are no auto power off options enabled anywhere but still it seems as if it randomly turns off and I'm never there to discern why. Anyone had similar problems?

Imaglin, are you running bios 1.15? i would guess that is your trouble. mine was not overheating or anythin like that. just needed bios update.
