My new i9400 taking a while to turn on. - Page 3

I'm incorrect, the problem still exists.

At least I proved to myself Vista 32 bit and 64 bit make no difference with this problem. Yesterday was a hot day and I guess the computer needs a longer time to cool down to the point where it won't cold start on battery.

I'm going to put my original T2600 cpu back in and send the puter to Dell for repair.

Hi everybody,

I have same problem as above. Laptop will not start from battery only when cold.
If I plug AC, start and then reboot without AC, everything is OK. Very strange.
The laptop is several weeks old and I've already replaced screen under warranty (dead pixels).
Initially it was installed with Vista, now I've got XP. Same problem anyway.
Looks to me that there is not enough power to start-up screen or graphics card. Or maybe just loose/cold connection.
Also, I've installed latest bios (A08) & loaded default settings.

Sometimes if I try Power Button on/off few times, say over 5 minutes period, laptop eventually starts, but not always.
No problems when starting from warm or after using it for a while. Still puzzled. Would like to know of proper sollution.

FYI. I have the six cell battery.

I've investigated everything I could think of, so I would suggest you email Dell tech support, and suffer through their instructions with the back and forth action/results dialog untill they conclude you need to have your computer sent back for repair.

Seems like what what we all have in common is the NVidia 7XXX series video card. My problem only showed up after I replaced the ATI card with the NVidia card. I suspect a video card bios upgrade is in order. Dell should be notified.

I have the 9 cell battery, so to me, that seems to rule out a battery problem. The tech just called, should be here in an hour or so, will update when he leaves.

I too have a 7900GS, however, the first laptop i had did as well, and it never had cold start problems. It just up and quit after two weeks (i think the video card blew), and dell sent this replacement, which, unfortunately, has had the coldstart problems for the last 2 months.

Looks like that was the ticket. The tech said he has had quite a few in the past few months with the same exact issue. Seems to be running like a kitten. The battery was ice cold when he popped it in and it started just fine. Going to do one last test, let it cool down overnight to make sure, and try again, but from all appearances, the motherboard replacement seemed to cure the ailment.

Ive rarely heard of this issue its quite shocking to hear a tech say that well im glad you got your issue resolved let us know if comes back to haunt you.

I sent the laptop to Dell last Thursday afternoon, and got it back Monday afternoon. They replaced the motherboard, and it appears to be cold starting now. I'll confirm after a few days.

still booting fine with both batteries. no troubles.

Two out of two cold starts were successful. I'll probably buy another Dell in the future, eventhough I've experienced two hardware defects on my new E1705, because they fixed those problems for free. It may have been frustrating to go through their tech support, but in the end they backed up their product. If I am convinced product quality, good tech support, timely service, and value are at least equal to what Dell has to offer, then I'll consider buying a non-Dell computer, because of those two hardware defects I experienced.

I did a clean install of 64 bit Vista. Vista recognized the motherboard hardware change, telling me my activation code was already in use, making it impossible to activate my most recent Vista installation. Microsoft's phone service tech support took me about 15 minutes, but I was pleased they quickly addressed the issue and gave me a new activation key for no charge.
