XPS M1210 refuses to start/load XP

Hello.

My brand new XPS M1210 refuses to load XP at first try. I get the initial Dell logo window, then the XP window with the lower bar showing it is loading, and then a black screen. I have to use the on/off button to turn it off, then on, at which time I get the screen saying Windows did not start up, with options to start it (like when pushing F8: normal start up, secure mode, etc...). The "default " option is "normal start up", which works most of the times, but in a few occasions I got the mentioned black screen and had to do all the process again.
Sometimes it starts up normally, but this is only 1 out of four.

What to do to solve this problem?

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like a hardware problem (namely video, or possibly an external device), although a bad driver or corrupt windows data could cause those problems, but on a brand new system with Dell-loaded drivers, it's probably not a software issue. You could run chkdsk (go to start, run, type chkdsk /f, it'll tell you to do it on reboot, choose y, and reboot), and that will check the disk for errors / file corruption... it's a generic fix for some issues caused by that.

But if it's hardware it'd be good to narrow it down... do you have any peripherals connected? Try booting with only the power adapter plugged in. If it still happens, I'd start troubleshooting by testing out the video card... load in a 3d game or a benchmark program and see if your system crashes or freezes, or even if you get graphical glitches and/or artifacts (textures not being properly drawn, etc).

When my inspiron 8200 card was going bad a few years ago, I had a similar problem where it might boot past the WindowsXP loading screen but not into Windows, and I had some of the other issues I mentioned to check for.

Or, just call XPS support... it's a brand new laptop, and if you get a technician that actually speaks English, there's a decent chance they'll just replace the laptop so you don't have to do hours of troubleshooting on your brand new toy.

Hope all this helps somehow... good luck.

Thanks tragedy. Well, it seems that "the PC Gods" are on my side today. A few days ago I disabled the wireless network connection, to stop the constant notifications that a wireless network has been found, etc. Today, when I was doing some checkings, at one point I decided to start NOT with the usual "normal start", but with the "secure" start. At start up, Windows told me to go fix some network problem. I enabled the wireless network connection, and now everything seems to be fine....and I think I learnt how to stop the nasty notifications. Best, Ignacio

If you installed a new(er) version of Daemon Tools, it will do that.
The Core Duo processing of the Dell machine is incompatible with the SPTD that is part of the program.
If this is the case, installing Daemon Tools 3.47 will do the trick.
Hope this helps,

This is a common problem for us. SPTD.sys is a driver that interferes with the Logitech Quickcam software. If you uninstall the quickcam software, but keep the camera drivers, you can install Daemon tools or Alcohol 120% and still use the camera with windows meda maker, and countless webcam software out there on the internet.

Thanks jenn.

I thought the problem was solved when I enabled the wireless network connection, but that was not the case.

I have Alcohol 52% installed. I am going to uninstall quickcam software, BUT what should I do to keep the camera drivers?

And...any webcan software you can recommend?

Just go to add/remove programs and get rid of Logitech Quick Cam.

As for webcam, for Video- use Windows Movie Maker. It's easy to capture.

For pics, you can use the windows capture in My Computer for it - but there's no settings.

With Yawcam, you can not only change the settings, but you can set a schedule for pics and such - http://www.yawcam.com/

Do you know if the camera will work with Skype if I do as suggested?

I am 98% sure it will with just the drivers and no quickcam installed. If you need to reinstall, the drivers on Dell's site give you a choice in the installer to install quickcam and drivers, or drivers only. EDIT: Yes, it works just fine without the quickcam drivers.
