What are you going to use it for dude. We need more info?
Are you a heavy gamer, need long battery life, number cruncher, vidoe editing, making music, watching dvds?

Let me settle this:

heavy gamer...sager
long battery life...sager (comon...one hour is long enough, your just gonna bring it to the can with you, right?)
number cruncher...sager
watching dvds...sager
making music...sager
video editing...sager

sorry, had to do it!

I would get a Fujitsu P5000, but then that is just the ultraportable loving geek inside of me talking.

But really like the others said.. tell us what you want from it.

another country...
get one with an international warrenty. Most do not have that.
and get an older model, since those have more things like power adapters.
Get the max warrenty offered. Get all the little options including power adapters, spare battery, and extra batteries for the bays.
Since you're traveling get a Centrino based model.

I have a similar situation here and I bought IBM T41 (no p since I'm no gamer). It's light and strong-built. The monitor cripsy (well, other than Sony and toshiba's newest monitor)
So far it has been solid. No dead pixel and no HD problem. And most importantly, I will have 3 years International warranty.
The harddrive protection system is cool also.

I believe HP small business lappy's come with a standard 3 year world wide warranty. They currently have a preconfigured nc8000 for $1699 that would fulfill your needs nicely. Check out hp.com and have a look. You have to go to the small business side, of course. You could probably have it shipped to you in a few days.

Asus gives 2 yr. worldwide warranty as well.

depending on whether you are staying in the foreign country long enough that the laptop will be old and antiquated by the time you bring it back, you might just want to buy the laptop from a foreign country, but remember to check on the power supply options, american laptops will be set up to accept power from 110v outlets, but most european countries, and many others, use 220v outlets, make sure you either by the right laptop, or calculate in the necessity of buying a system to transfer the power through.

I'd second the any HP nc (nc6000 or nc8000, forget the underpowered nc4000) series laptop. From my experience with my middle of the road nc6000, to what others have said about the nc8000, they seem to be the best mainstream "all-around" laptops available.

Asus M6N for multimedia laptop or S5N for ultraportable. As someone else stated, they have a 2 year warranty.

Most laptops have an automatic voltage switcher.
