8204 - x1600 Driver issue

Hi,
I've been using the video driver which originally came with my Acer TravelMate 8204 for quite some time and things have been working fine however when I installed NeedForSpeed Carbon I was not able to play it. Everytime i'd load up the game i'd get the BSOD.

So I assumed it was a driver issue and uninstalled the ATI Catalyst driver which came with my laptop and installed the newest ATI Omega driver.

Once installed I was asked to reboot my pc however I chose not to. I then loaded the game and it worked fine but after I shutdown the pc and booted up into windows, I get BSOD immediately.

I went into safemode and uninstalled the omega driver and I was able to boot into windows fine again.
I tried installing the omega driver once with overclocking enabled and then with it disabled and I still got the same result.

I have also tried to install the newest ATI Catalyst driver 6.11 however I once again was not able to boot up into windows. I get BSOD and my system restarts.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the ATI Mobility 6.10s instead of the 6.11s. It seems to be a 50/50 chance with this laptop.
The 6.10 work very well for me with NFSC. But I have the Acer Apire 5672 with X1600.

So far in reading threads. One person has had no problems installing the 6.10 on his Travelmate 8204. I also heard one person had the exact same problem as you are haveing but with the 6.10s. Now you with the 6.11s. So it's all 50/50 with your laptop.

Good luck.

BSODs after upgrading ATI driver are typically a sign of a "lingered" DLL from another version.

Try this. Go to http://www.driverheaven.net and look for Driver Cleaner in their downloads section. Get it, install.
Uninstall old ATI driver (both control panel/CCC and driver). Boot into safe mode. Run Driver Cleaner and tell it to clean up ATI stuff. Reboot normally. Cancel out of any "New hardware found" popups. Install Omega driver or whichever other version you want.

Thanks, i'll first try the installing the latest omega driver after running driver cleaner from safemode, if that does not work i'll try the newest catalyst driver else i'll resort to an older driver (6.10 as gman4u2 said).

Thanks for the help..I'll reply letting you know how it goes incase this problem occurs for ither 8200 owners.

I tried what you have told me and the first time I booted up using the Omega driver, everything worked fine. However when I boot up without being connected to an AC Outlet i get a bsod. I will try the old drivers and see if they work.

A pity it did not work out. Just one more idea if you are willing to try it. European Acer FTP site has drivers for all laptops. It's possible that ATI driver for laptops that just came out is more recent while both supporting x1600 and been through Acer QC. Probably not he latest but newer than what came with TM8204. The URL is ftp://ftp.acer-euro.com/notebook/ Aspire 5590 seems to be the latest that has vga_ati.zip (73 MB though), the more latest TravelMates come with integrated Intel graphics.

I have big problems with ATI drivers too. I can use only ACERs original drivers or ATIs v6.8. When I use any other drivers, I cannot use PowerPlay fuction because whenever I try setup it, screen goes blank and notebook freezes.

Sorry i havent responded sooner, you got me at thanksgiving break. Glad to see the mobility 6.10 worked for ya kobhi4ev. NFSC should be smoking now :-). My brother beat it on his laptop 100%. I still think they need to patch it better for nvidia players though. They have a 1.3 patch ready if your interested. Dont see any performance increases mentioned in there patch release notes.

Muki, what laptop/ graphics card do you have? And what "Mobility" ati drivers have you tryed already?

I have ACER TRAVELMATE 8204 WLMI, ATI x1600. I have tryed ATI Mobility drivers v6.8,.6.9, 6.10, 6.11 and I can use only v6.8.

kobhi4ev!! Do you have powerplay functionality? We need to see if this is an isolated incident or not. I do not have the travelmate, I have the Aspire 5672 x1600. My powerplay seems to work fine. I'm using the ATI mobility 6.10 currently. If kobhi4ev's travelmate is having the same problem, we may have to start a new thread for this.

If your laptop is the only one with this problem, I can only suggest reinstall. Do you install drivers over one another or do you use ati uninstall utility and/or driver cleaner?
I of course would recommend the latter.

Well see if we get a response from other travelmate users. I wish I had a travelmate to see if I could duplicate the problem. Time to play the waiting game :-)

I've tryed four things:
1. uninstalling old drivers, then installing the new ones.
2. uninstalling old drivers, then ATI uninstaller or DH driver cleaner.
3. reinstalling the whole system from ACER backup DVD that I've made by first notebok start (+ point 1,2)
4. reinstalling the whole system but I've used my retail WXP SP2 from my desktop

I've never had any success. Only ATIs v6.8 drivers or ACERs old ones can be used.

Ups... I've tryed one more thing. I have reworked ACER OEM CD with integrated hotfixes and some other stuff where I was trying the first three points (see above) with no success.

I am running original Cat 6.10 modded for mobility on my TM8104. A buddy of mine is running NGO set based off Cat 6.9 on TM8204. I install only driver, no CCC, no control panel. Ever since Omega started packaging CCC I stopped using that driver set. NGO builds come with control panel or CCC - you choose.

For reference, http://www.ngohq.com and check Files section for drivers. May happen to work for you (some people like them, some do not).

I was running the latest omega drives the other day, any ways they were all good except when using the s video out, it would lag, and the tv screen would flash every time the computer lagged.

Any ways I went to Atis catylist 6.10 and every thing seems fine... any one else have similar issues?
