8790 keyboard replacement

So, after almost 3 years, well 2.5 more like, with the 8790, I have had my first true glitch. I thought that my computer had died because at start up it wouldn't get past the initial RAM, video check and mouse initialization. Then, I left it on for a long time, and it finally got through boot-up, but the keyboard wouldn't work. The mouse was also very slow and erratic. So, I took the keyboard off, plugged in a USB keyboard, and voila, everything is fine. Boots up as normal, everything working flawlessly, just no laptop keyboard.

I tried starting this way ~7 times, and everytime was fine. Plugged the laptop keyboard in, unplugged USB keyboard, and same problems as before.

I only purchased the one year warranty back in 2004, so that is up, but I was wondering if I should just get a new keyboard and hope that that is the problem, and not something more sinister on the motherboard?

Anyone know how I would go about getting another keyboard? Just email Sager? I think the 8790 is d/c, but perhaps the keyboard is the same on another model?

Thanks in advance.

First step would be to contact Sager. I believe (not sure) that this 8790 keyboard is the same one that is used in the later and current models of Sager Laptops with the full keyboard...

If Sager can't help you out - Try RJ's...

Edit: Or is that JR's....

I emailed Sager awhile ago and they still sell the keyboards that fit in our 8790's. Not sure I remember the correct price, but it's not too bad.

Thanks guys. I guess I will try that, as things haven't gotten a whole lot better in the last day or two. I am writing from a nice little PS/2 keyboard that my stepfather was nice enough to get for me. I am questioning at the moment whether it wouldn't be better to get a new laptop, and resign this computer as a "desktop", instead of the desktop replacement it is touted as. I think that the replacement keyboard goes for ~$80.

It is something to think about, as a I have a fully functional, yet not transportable, laptop right now. Thanks for all of your help.

G-Omaha, are you still with your 8790? I remember back when I was contemplating getting mine that your journey was well documented, and helped me make my decision.

Best,
J

You could also replace the keyboard and then sell it. That's what I plan on doing eventually, since my keyboard is the only part on the computer that shows definite signs of age. I plan on using what I get for my 8790 toward parts for a desktop.

I bought my keyboard from Golden Star Computer(Clevo). It costs less than Sager or Hypersonic, but they just use a different name for it(D87P). I bought it 2 months ago and it was $44. $26 for the keyboard and $18 for the shipping. Their phone number is 909-598-2263

Still running strong. I do have the whites of some of the keys starting to come off so I'll probably be looking at a new keyboard sometime in the future. Just can't seem to master that "touch typing" thing even though I've been typing on a regular basis for more than 30 years - go figure.

No problem I just one day was looking for a replacement battery and keyboard for the Hypersonic GX7, and I found their website, which no longer exists, but they still have their phone line.

Hi

I got two laptop keyboards from www.laptopking.com and they were both perfect.

You might look at the pictures here:

I don't know if this is the same as your model, but you can look at the graphic, compare, and search by model info. If you removed your keyboard already, it may have a helpful model number on the back.

You might beat the above listed prices, so its probably good to call, and check around.

Good luck.

I just want to thank everyone for their help so far. I looked around on the net, and found a replacement keyboard for ~US$150. I haven't yet called Golden Star Computer, but probably will today.

I do have one other question however, it seems that the only keys that aren't working, are the +, -, and Num Lock on the number pad, and the "Del" and F11 key. Now, I could deal with any of these, but the F11 key!!! I can't figure out how to turn my wireless on now!! If anyone knows of a way around using the Fn-F11 combo to enable the wireless card, I would be greatly in your debt.

Thanks again.

I know that this might sound a bit stupid - but, I'll provide the advice anyway. I had a stuck key a few months back and I lifted the keyboard (4 tabs located in front of the ESC, F6/F7, PrtSc, and the "*" on the num pad). I then blew some compressed air through the underside of the keyboard (all keys). After I re-snapped the keyboard back into place I aggressively "pounded" each key and since then have not had any problems.

Now when I say "pounded", I mean just press it somewhat hard - don't use a hammer or force it too much.

Who knows, it might work for you as you might have a few "crumbs" or other junk lodged in the keyboard. I smoke a lot and think that the dust combined with the tar started to "gunk things up".

Not a silly question at all, though I have taken the keyboard off more than once, and especially this time. I am really perplexed that there doesn't seem to be any other way to get the wireless card working than the Fn-F11 combo. I don't have the manual with me, and was wondering whether anyone knew of another way to do it? I even tried hooking the PS/2 keyboard up and trying the Fn-F11(from the PS/2 keyboard), but to no avail. Though it was pretty cool typing from both the laptop keyboard, and the attached keyboard. I felt a little like Rick Wakemen. Oh well.

The saga continues.....

Yes, the cheapest I have found was Golden Star and the second cheapest is from Hypersonic. (Manufacturer of the GX7 which is the same thing as the 8790 but with a different name) http://secure.hypersonic-pc.com/scri...ProductID=3366
