I can't figure out how to use my built-in SD card reader, please help!

I just picked up a 1gig SD card for my shiny new Wii. My Acer Aspire 5600 has a 5-in-1 card reader built into it, but when I insert the card nothing happens. I've scoured the internet and tried all the programs on the computer, I can't figure out how to access it. I checked device manager, it says the "SDA standard compliant SD Host Controller" is functioning fine, is that even what I'm looking for? Please help!

you might want to make sure you pushed it in all the way. you should feel a click when it locks in place

It goes in about 4/5ths with no click. I push it pretty hard and it doesn't go further...

have you looked in Windows Explorer to see if its in there? Windows Explorer is should be the place where you can view the files and drag-and-drop files.

Has it ever worked before? If this is the first time you've tried it... go into the device manager to see if it is there or not (installed correctly or not). If not, go to your manufacturers website and download and then install the correct drivers. This should solve your problem.

this might sound stupid, but have you tried flipping it upside down and inserting it again? On mobile devices, the pins are face up, but on the computer, the pins are face down.

Yup, Windows Explorer was the first place I checked. It doesn't show up there at all

According to the device manager it is installed correctly if it is indeed the "SDA standard compliant SD Host Controller". I went to the Acer website and couldn't find anything; the site is not very well set up for support features.

I tried that It won't go in at all pins-up, it only fits in the slot when it's pins-down.

Well I found the drivers that is listed for your model number:

http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/for...ords=&areaid=7

Try removing the software drivers and installing them back on with the fresh drivers from the link provided.

hmmm... there may be some small obstruction in the slot. My guess is that the pins just aren't making contact, and that it doesn't have anything to do with your driver or software. if you haven't used the reader before, it might also be defective.

Hey Rob, how was your Thanksgiving?

I'd thought I'd point out that the SD card doesn't necessarily go in all the way on his model. I know it does on the Z71V, however on my M560A, it doesn't. Thats an excellent idea though... check around (or speak with the manufacture) to see if it's supposed to go in all the way in the first place.

That driver worked like a charm, thanks Bahama! Now it wants to format the card, but it says the card is write protected (I tried putting the card in both the lock and unlock positions). When I put the card in my Nintendo Wii the Wii is able to write to the card, but the PC insists it's write protected. What could be the problem?

some cards have a stub on its side making them write protected. the tab slides up and down. it might also be red or another color. if you're familiar on how floppy disks can be made write protected, you understand what to look for. check your card carefully. slide the tab to the opposite position its currently in.

Did you format the card in the Wii? That may be the issue.

I've now tried the scotch tape method of holding the lock switch in place and also tried the card in the Nintendo Wii; when the lock is activated it won't write to the card, when it's not it writes to it just fine. In My Computer I can read the contents of the card but I can't write to it or format it because it always says it's write protected. I found a panasonic card formatting program and it also said the card was write protected. I'm completely out of ideas; can anyone think of anything that might help me?

Tonight I exchanged the card for another one; the new one has the exact same problem (Laptop keeps saying it's write protected). It's likely the reader at this point; could it be a problem with the driver?
