Having done a search I see that some others have had similar problems but I couldn't find a definitive answer - has it turned out to be the screen or is this a driver problem? I'm out of warranty by now, so this could be very expensive to fix.
Many thanks for any feedback.
My story about these lines:
Last month, the screen on my XPS Gen 2 developed these lines. Since it was still under warranty, Dell came out an replaced the screen. The lines were gone, for about 6 days. The new screen developed a purple line, but in a different place. Dell AGAIN came out, this time replacing both the screen and the video card. However, they brought the wrong screen (the non-true-life screen) and in the process of replacing everything, did something to the bluetooth card. They came out AGAIN the next day with the correct screen and a new bluetooth card. The lines were gone, for another week. Then they came back. At this point, Dell was going to replace the motherboard, the video card, and the screen. I complained and was granted a replacement computer that I'm now waiting for.
Since a replacement takes 15 business days, I'm using the computer with the lines. Over the last two weeks, what started with one line is now up to 8 lines. That said, Dell is replacing it with a m1710 with Core 2 Duo T7600, 7950, etc... so it's worth the wait. :-)
The lesson is that it may not just be the screen. It could be the video card or even motherboard or something. It could be a fairly expensive thing to replace. The other lesson: buy a long warranty when you get the computer. With Dell, it's worth it.
