I got an SMC Barricade with parallel printer server at a thrift store for $3.99 once. If I needed a wired router today, I'd probably get a wireless and disble the wireless part either from the configuration screens or take a pair of wire cutters to it.

Head to a local computer store and ask for a simple wired router or switch. You can find good cheap ones for around $25-$35 that are more than fit for home use, sharing a broadband connection and making a small home network to share files.

The port quantity can vary from 4 to 10 depending on the brand and price, make sure it is a 10/100 mbps one for faster transfers between computers and better network sharing. They usually don't require any software or configuration.

Make sure to have the proper firewall and antivirus software too for keeping the network secure, not that anyone will steal your bandwidth on a wired network.

It is always better to keep the computers protected against viruses and hackers which could harm your data. You can also contact the company that provides support for your wireless router and have them guide you on how to set permission only for certain computers to access your wireless network.

I have a wired network myself, not that the computers at home are very far from each other but saves me the time to change the access settings every now and then to keep it secure.

(Yes, I know that a determined hacker can break into a home wireless network if they really put their hearts into it, but they usually pick on easier prey who have their wireless network fully open).

Setting up WPA isn't that hard, and with a 20 character password that combines, uppercase, lowercase and numerical digits it would take 4 times the age of the universe to break with coWPAtty. Heck it would take a long time just to find out your password isn't all lower case a's. If you're still set on wired you can just turn off the wireless portion.....at least on Linksys routers you can. My WRT54G has it's wireless turned off (since it isn't in a good spot in my house).

you can also use MAC filtering. That's a pretty hard one for someone to get around, unless they've been in your house and looked at the addresses of all your wireless equipment..

did you find one?

wireless is not that secure didn't see the FBI video of them crackin wep in 20min? using standard freely available tools off the net? now there is specific linux distro's with all the tools u need. as well as a GUI version for OSX called KisMAC. but to the point at hand, a decent wired router can be found at http:///www.newegg.com or you can always convert a old pc also, u can score network cards for like 2 dollars on the net, and put a old pc to some good, alotta tutorials on the net for that.but if you are trying to do lan parties, u might wanna throw down a little extra cash and get something quality
