LCD, DLP, HDTV, Plasma ??? - Page 4

My order of preference

DLP > LCD > Plasma

About the only way I would have a plasma is if it was DIRT cheap or given to me. I think it has the best picture quality, but also prefer not to get something that is unrepairable. My lamp is very easily replaced. A botched plasma is landfill fodder.

Edit:
Just a side note, I know of several people who have had plasma's less than 2 years before them coming unusable. I also know several people with DLP's (including myself) and have yet to see a single bulb burn out yet.

It also comes down to if you need thin or not. Obviously a DLP will take up much more space than an LCD or plasma, and you can't hang a DLP on the wall.

Just went through the torture of picking out a 1080p LCD TV for the bedroom. Narrowed it down to Sony, Samsung, and Mitsubishi. Ended up with the Sony KDL-40V2500 Bravia...the XBR2 was nice, but I didn't have the space for the extra large Bezel. Samsung was also good, and I liked the Mitsubishi Picture the best, but it was only 37". So far the 40V2500 is performing outstanding...using it with the Xbox 360 and HD-DVD add-on. Haven't had a chance to hook up my PC, but will do that soon.

NOW...I'm looking for a larger TV for the main TV...will probably go with a larger Plasma (55-65). I like the Plasma PQ, and even a DLP is too thick for where I want to put it. I much prefer the pic of Plasma over LCD on the larger displays. Now choosing between the Panasonic and Pioneer...unless anyone has any better ideas.

All suggestions/recommendations welcomed.

Can't argue there. The plasmas definitely have a petter picture quality, especially on the larger displays.

The Pioneer did have a better picture, but at $2600 more than my DLP, I can replace a few bulbs and still save money. I prefered the DLP picture over both LCD and LCD Projection televisions.

If I had unlimited money, I'd buy Plasma and never look back.

Of course, if I had a large enough house I wouldn't have a TV, I'd have an HD projector. 8)

Good Choice, and samsung makes very nice TVs.

LCD/Plasma just a think of the past, DLP forever!

Ah, the Bravia--by most accounts (all?) a very very good unit. Even stodgy old Consumer Reports top-rated that one. Excellent black levels (for an lcd--overall very good against most any tech), nice styling, top resolution (1080p)... Nice!

Now being in the unique position that I have both an DLP and a Plasma, the DLP is my main set in my living room. Why? Well the picture is better than my Mitsu plamsa, and my DLP does not not emit as much room noise as the plasma does. The plasma has a wonderful audible buzzing noise which is caused by the altitude here in Denver.

Now on the DLP, in three years it never had a bulb replaced, on year four the replace bulb indicator lamp came on. I ordered a bulb for $150 and replaced it in my living room, problem solved. It was only later on that it suffered a failure of the picture posix light engine. This was as random a failure as anything that can fail in a four year old TV.

I was issued a check from the warranty company and promptly replaced it yesterday with a JVC 56" LC0S 1080P screen, which again when side by side with a Panasonic plasma at the store the DLP won. Do I mind changing a light bulb every three otr four years? No, not really. Would I get an LCD? Maybe when they get to the 60" realm.
If I am looking to get a 1080p screen in the 37-42 inch range, would LCD be the best way to go in this case? Also, I DO care about changing bulbs every few years, since it really isn't something I feel comfortable doing yet.

Yes definitely LCD, however don't fear the bulb change. You just open a little door, slide the old one out, and slide the new one in.

LCD is a great option in the 37-42" range, and there are quite a few to choose from. As I mentioned above, I'm quite happy with my 40" Sony Bravia...this is Sony's "second" class LCD, but has a comparable performance to the higher cost XBR2 series.

IMO, picture quality on most of the sets is quite good...the one thing to check closely is what type of inputs they have...especially if you want to hook up a gaming console or your PC.

A relative owns a 65 inch DLP TV and has had to replace the lamp once which cost $200. The process was painless and the TV is still great not to mention dwarfs his 42 inch plasma in his basement. Ive never been a fan of Samsung screens that are larger than 32 inches and unfortunetly since Sony's ENTIRE Bravia line are Samsung LCD's they falll under my hate list.

Hmmmnn...I wasn't that switched on to the DLP units, but we've been checking out the 71" Samsung 1080p unit...have to say it looks darn good. And, the price is considerable less than a 60"+ Plasma.

For the 37-42" range, it's hard to beat the new LCDs.

lol...no, about 12 ft. This TV won't be used for regular viewing, but will be our "movie" screen, with a bit of Xbox 360 thrown in. Have always wanted a real home theater set up, but our house just doesn't work for it. These larger DLP sets can get you close, at least provide some of that "immersion" feeling.

Rod Stewart rings a bell...but my memory is old and my musical knowledge weak....

Ha! You got it--it's Rod Stewart's "Some Guys Have all the Luck."

Your memory is neither old (if you watch VH1) nor weak.

Three possibilities: 1) someone(s) used mathematics based on known resolution of the human eye (btw measured in arc-seconds of resolution, I believe). 2) someone(s) went to the trouble of running tests with "how does this look? Well, can you tell a difference NOW?". Sort of like the optometrists office. 3) a hybrid of the two.
