m9700 processor

I am still trying to configure my m9700 for purchase. Should I go for the ML44 or should I save $375 and get the ML34? How would this impact my games (HL2, Oblivion, NWN2)? Can I just buy an ML44 online, cheaper than $375 and put it in myself?

Also, the reason I am buying this is my souped up 9300 finally went kaput. I had upgraded the video card to the 7800, pinmodded the CPU, etc. Last week after about two hours of NWN2, the game quit with some error, and I was getting some weird graphics in windows, so I shutdown. Upon trying to power on, it tries for about 10 seconds and powers down. Not sure what it is. I could try to fix it, but my laziness is kicking in. I just want to start fresh. I am hoping to use my RAM and harddrive from the Dell.

I'd go all the way with the ML44...the CPU is the "weak" link in the m9700, so best to max it out. That said, I haven't had any problems with mine holding me back.

btw, I'm into NWN2 with the m9700, and it's going well. Took a while to configure SLI, but now I'm getting good framerates, and gameplay is smooth.

Shazza ftw...

The turion processors are being phased out this year to be replaced by the turion X2, so if you get the top end ML-44 now, you'll never wonder if you should upgrade for more speed. You should check pricing on the processor though as if you can get it cheaper, you'll also have the ML-34 to sell on ebay.

You can use the hd and ram from the... Dell... if the hd is SATA150 and the memory is 200 pin DDR400 notebook memory.

I went for the 44 from Alienware. RAM and HD are easy. Processors, well, that depends on how hard AW makes it. I have never owned an AW before, but from past experience, Dell was easy, but Toshiba was hard, and eMachine was hard. I don't mean impossible, but depending on the laptop manufacturer depends on how much you have to take apart before you get to the CPU.

Even emahcine notebook made one stick of the RAM hard.

well on the m9700 almost everything is user replacebable, hell you even have alienware knowlegbase articles to guide you on how to replace VC, memori, HDD's, CPU, etc....

The m9700 is the easiest computer I've seen for access. The hard drives are slotted in the side, and most everything else is accessible directly under the back panel. 4 screws, and you're in business.

I hit my first bump in the road. I actually ordered it two days ago, got my order number right then, checked status and it was in "Phase 1". I checked again this morning and still was in Phase 1. I then called Alienware, and they said that it should be past that by now, so transfered me to billing. I got billing and she said that there was a problem with my credit card. I was surprised at this as there is never a problem. I told her not to hang up with me, but rather to conference in my credit card's 800 number. She reluctantly did this and the credit card said that there should be no problem. After that, she (alienware) said hold on and I will run it through. She came back and she then said it was approved.

I guess what upset me is why didn't they send me and email or call me to let me know of this "problem". As much as I am spending, I hope there aren't any more "problems".

Keeping my fingers crossed.

I ordered with min HD and min Memory. I plan two use the 2G DDR400 memory out of my inspiron. Now for the HD(s). Can't use the old one (PATA). Saw Toshiba 120GB@5400 for SATA150 at newegg. Best bang-for-buck. Thoughts? Is the alienware like my old sager where you can have either SATA or PATA?
well if teh memory is DDR 1 3200 it should work, as for the HDD it NEEDS to be SATA or it wont work, this doesnt have a cable like teh sager or the m7700, it plugs directly into teh HDD daugther board

As far as my HD goes, I want to order this now, so I wont have to wait once my computer comes in. I have been reading other threads and saw one suggestion of using 7200 as a primary. Anyone have any recommendations?

the best way to go is to use a 7200rpm as your primary and your games drive and a slower bigger drive for storage like my set up

i use the logitech G7 its wireless its laser and its great for gaming or any from teh razer line of products
post #18 of 24
I have both a razer diamond back and a logitech G5. I'm not a wireless fan yet...

The razer performs well, but it's too small for my hand. I love the G5, it fits my hand, is easily adjustable including a set of weights that come with it, and it's very accurate.
