the G1 a retrospect

Thread Starter
I've had my Mayhem G1 now for over 2 months. It is the single best PC purchase I've ever made. To date this makes the 12th box I've bought for myself.

I continue to load the newest games that come around - Unreal 2004, EA's MLB 2004, Tiger Woods Golf 2004, etc. and this wonderful notebook just keeps amazing me with it's processing power and graphical display. I travel a lot and the ability to carry a notebook with me that allows playing of the top- end games while on the road is something I could only dream about 10 years ago (hell, even 2 years ago). It weighs a couple lbs more than many of the more anemic notebooks out there, and the battery goes for only about 2 hours, but I wouldn't sacrifice these minor disadvantages for a lesser notebook (and you "M" class ppl know who I'm talking about).

A buddy of mine bought a Dell "M" class M60 about the same time I bought my G1 and is constantly whining about wishing he had waited and researched his decision more, because he envies my G1 (that sounds sort of pretentious, but I don't know any other way to put it). EA's MLB runs visibly slower on his, and tends to crash quite often, and other such issues. He's past his return time so he can't send it back now.

Anyway, for all you misguided folks out there that may have passed up the G1 (or any P4 for an "M" class)...you messed up!

Dashby, hate to rock your boat, but I disagree. I thought the same way you did, but then I actually purchased a PM notebook, and not just any PM, a "slow" 1.4 GHz PM. My machine is amazing, it also runs any games that I throw at it, DX9 games at XGA, and anything else at SXGA+. The G1 is a beautiful and powerful machine, but it is just not right for everyone. The video card is a fully DX9 compliant Radeon 9600 (not pro, just normal). Perhaps the reason your friend's is so slow is because it uses an older video card.

LOL, the P4 or PM isn't the difference more than likely. Have you checked the vid cards like Jmans suggested? Have you researched PM's very much? There is VERY LITTLE real world difference in computing power between the 2 processors according to everything I have read. A 1.7 PM is equivalent to a 3.06 P4. That should be powerful enough for almost any apps out there. The vid card is the roadblock not the PM.

Dashby, Dashby... Come on now...

To each there own man. Not everyone is going to love a P4 in a notebook. Not everyone is going to love the heat it produces. Not everyone is going to love the power consumption and short battery life. Some people would rather do some research, find out the facts and instead of having a bigger/higher number, are more comfortable w/ themselves to have to prove thier manhood through a computer. Come on now..

See, I hadn't done the research. All I had to go on, was that I had previously purchased a desktop machine from ABS and wanted a gaming laptop. Called ABS, and was naively talked into a G1 instead of an F2 by one of there sales associates. Okay, I'll give it a try. 30 days, why not...

Well, all was well and good, but a few things were really bothering me, so...

I returned my G1 after about 2 weeks. Though there were things I liked about it, I just couldn't get past the fact that the battery could do me no better than 1:17. Check out Mobile PC's review of it. They say it's the G1's killer drawback. The battery life sucks!
The heat was also pretty dang bad on my unit. The left palm area heated up real nicely after about 45 mins of gameplay. No Thanks.

The fans are always on, and kinda loud for my taste.
But, I did like the look and feel. The build quality was excellent, as was the keyboard, touchpad (sidescrolling was also very cool). Screen was very nice as well.
For me though, I didn't want to have to be near an outlet all the time. It kind of negates the point of a notebook computer.

I bought a Dell 8600. It's the perfect notebook for me! 4+ hrs of Batt. Life!
Believe it or not my futuremark scores w/ default settings and 1/2 gig less ram were 200 points higher on the Dell. And, it does EVERYTHING the G1 did. It's a 1.7, 512 ram, 128 Radeon 9600. Plus I had the option of getting the SXGA+ screen which is awesome. 1600x1250 kicks ass.

But hey, to each thier own.

I'm glad you're happy w/ your G1, that's what makes the world go round.
No need to judge others that don't share Dashby's view of the world. That's what makes us all unique brother.

P.S. If you ever get a chance, try checking out a Dell 8600's performance. Believe me the build quality won't impress you.. Dell uses very cheap plastics and imo they going backwards in design. But the Centrino chips aren't to be underestimated. Plus, 4 hours of battery life is more to my likeing.

Peace.

I think there are people who actually prefer to have a decent amount of battery life, such as I and kindser. If you are happy with your less than 2 hour battery life thats good... but you have to keep an open mind and realize that there are those who differ from your needs, and that doesnt mean that they messed up as you put it.

I own a G1 and I am very happy with it. I had to get a laptop to do tests on a wireless network that I am installing at a college. I bought an ABS because I bought an ABS desktop 2 years ago and I've been happy with that computer.Battery life realy wasn't an issue, I,ve never used my laptop unplugged for more than 1 hour. The main reason I bought the G1 was the price. My boss gave me 1500 dollars to buy a laptop and the weekend I went to order my laptop ABS was offering 50 dollars off bringing my G1 to 1592.00 delivered. I also hought that if battery life became an issue I would get an external battery but for now I dont need oneunless i have to start traveling....

Like everyone stated, its more a matter of preference than power. Some people can put up with the larger P4s, even when they offer very little performance improvements. No one computer is the "best". It depends on what you're looking for. If you only want to play games, my 64 mb radeon 9600 nc6000 isn't the "best". But its also not a mistake. For what I want to use it for (school and gaming and travelling) it was the "best".

Don't you see the poor guy just want to rationalize? Let's just say things he want to hear so he can feel better.

There...there...the P4 is the best. The P-M can't even compare. Some tabloid even said that the monsters who sewn together the P-M are being slaughtered...so the P-M won't even be here for long. There, there.

oh yeah that seems like a good tactic. Lets see... mmmm... ok I think I have one.

Dashby dont worry your notebook is the God of all notebooks. All other notebooks are underpowered and can not compare to the monster like power of yours. All others who did not buy your notebook will burn in hell for the sin which they have committed. Their heathen souls will persih in the flames of the underworld.

There, there Dashby. We all now that non-P4 users that passed up the G1 really messed up... since they dont have to wear a mitten when using the notebook. It must be such a rush to recieve 2nd degree burns from using a notebook

LOL, great posts guys.... Dashby has dashed off to greener pastures it seems(or maybe to the weight room so he can lug his monster around)? Or he's in P4 heaven from heat stroke? Maybe he had to move a little closer to the closest transfer station? That 440 direct feed just wasn't enough juice for that beast! That just leaves the "M" class folks left to wander the earth with the pain of knowing what "could have been" for us I guess. "M" class, we know who we are.... sounds like a line in a Mercedes commercial.

lol... sorry Dashby you brought this upon yourself.
