Presario C300 series are mostly 940GML - no dual core

And another evidence is the new bios f24a says it added support to m530 which is also 1.73ghz, even m530 is 965gml family. So teh answer is HP does not want you to run any higher than 1.73ghz period. Am i right?
Yes the F.24 Bios does add support for the CPUs you mention. Unfortunately, your laptop is 940GML... HP puts two different mainboards into the C300 series (and HP G3000 series)- only the models with 945 chipset will accept dual core processors. Laptops with model numbers that have a zero in the middle are 940GML, i.e. C301, C302, C303, C305 and so forth. C350EA or C399X are examples of laptops with the 945GM mainboard. On page 139 (Section 5.14) of the C300 maintenance manual the two mainboards are listed. The T1350 is the only CPU above Celeron class that will work. I just put a T1350 (Core Solo 1.86 GHz) in this C303NR (Celeron M 420 1.6 GHz) and it is much better- on battery it runs at 800 MHz instead of the full 1600 MHz, the fan hardly comes on.

Great to know t1350 works. It's really helped.

I did some study also the found following hopefully helps:

from c300 manual there are two MB models 940 and 945. from intel webs 940 is special designed for celeron M and celeron M ULV. So t1350 is really an exception. I doult its based on celeron M with some new stepping firmware.

for possible celeron M choice, the F.24a for c300 said "add support for M530." Which might indicate M540 and up may need to wait new bios to support.
btw, f.24a is different (file size) than f.24a for other models.

For guys have success cpu story other than celeron M, like

Buddpuppy and
hansbehrends,

can you guys do us a favore by reporting your MB model? it's normally under the second memory chip on MB, looking for pn like

"sps-435764-001 MB" or "sps-435765-001 MB"
which indicate 945gm and 940 gml. That will help a lot!

c300 cpu

Can't find t1350 information on intel webs

Curiously any success story for t1400 or even t1600?

I tried T2250, doesn't work in 940GML C303NR

I have tried a Core Duo T2250 (Yonah- based on Pemtium M microarchitecture). It is a OEM chip. 533 Mhz FSB/ 1733 MHz. Machine starts, fan sounds, but black screen. So from own experience I can say that Core Duo's do not work (The Core Solo in my laptop is basically the same chip but with one core disabled). I have read of other's experiences with Pentium Dual-Core processors: no one has gotten one to work in a 940GML mainboard. People with 943GML and 945GM etc. have had success with Core Duo's, pentium dual core and Core Duo upgrades. FWIW.

Mine MB is "sps-435765-001 MB" 940gml. next task I'm thinking is try a 667 solo core, like t1400 or t1600, since the northbridge support max 667mhz. cross fingers for that.
btw, like I said before, my t2400 task failed days ago the same like yours.

Definitely as per my post, 940GML.

Has anybody thought about swaping out their motherboard to the 435764-001?

I have a c306US and it works just fine for what I use it for, however I can't leave well enough alone. I have been looking for a 435764-001 MB ever since I read this thread. So far the cheapest I have found that was not a untested, no liquid damage, may or may not work board was $200. I have been hoping to find a pull from one with bad screen or something cheaper on ebay. Just comparing pictures on ebay it looks like there are lots of compaq MB configured exactly like the 435764-001 and 435765-001. The t1350 chip I have seen as low as $18 used and I thought about going that route but I would like to try the motherboard swap.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. Just bored and as this thing is due to be replaced later this year I thought I might tweak a little.

go for it, take pics and share with us ... nothing wrong with reviving an old thread

cheers ...

Hey guys! Have been watching this post for about a year lol I've got a C302TU with a "Intel Calistoga i945GM/PM" chipset. Before I click the buy it now button I just want to make sure I've read right but my laptop WILL support a Core2 yeah? I've struck it pretty lucky with this so far, about a year ago customer had a model with a DVD-RW, basically they didnt want to pay $200 for a new screen so opted to give me the laptop for spares also managed to score a 250Gb hdd for $99 at the time so I'm thinking its time for the CPU! Cheers in advance, Steve

Yep, the Compaq C302TU was built with different motherboards (gotta love that huh?). My 940GML chipset motherboard is still going strong with the T1350 (CoreSolo 1.86GHz).

Latest update is full compatibility with Windows 7 Build 7100 RC1 if anyone was curious!

So BuzzPuppy, in your humble what Core 2 would you try on my setup? I've got some advice from BuzzPuppy hes thinking give it a stab with an older CPU and ask the seller if they will refund if its a no go.... Can anyone reccomend a Core 2?!
Ummm, not making much sense (sorry) from above...

But the i945PM (Calistoga) can take Core2Solo and Core2Duo from Merom and Yonah families.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrin...orm_.282006.29

Once again, it's Wikipedia so you may want to check it out. Here's some Intel specs:

http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollecti...?codeName=2683

Now, the i945GM can only do 533/667MHz FSB, so it looks like the fastest CPU will be the Merom T7600 (2.33GHz Core2Duo). It's not going to be cheap!

[edit] Next update for this laptop is a 12 cell replacement for the HSTNN-OB17 battery, providing 8800mAH as opposed to 4300mAH purchased off eBay moments ago.

Do I get a G.Skill Falcon 128GB SSD next? Hmmm...

I just bought a T1350 on ebay for less than $10 shipped. I'll be putting it in a C304NR with the original F05 bios. I tried the latest F24 bios and when I used an external CRT monitor the resolution was completely screwed up on all the boot screens.

This laptop was given to me with a broken screen hinge and the tab key missing from the keyboard. I ordered the replacement parts over a week ago and I'm still waiting for them to come in. I already have a new battery for it, so with the cpu I just bought I should easily get over 3 hours like others have stated.

As a side note, this thing runs Windows 7 RTM just fine. The aero interface works "out of the box", but it is a little laggy. If that were disabled it would be a screamer. I upgraded this to 2GB DDR2 667 as well. It is good enough to run World of Warcraft as-is, so all things considered I think I got one hell of a good deal on it.

Thread Starter

core 2 duo is possible!

here's how:

441695-001 - C500 series with 945GM chipset (same layout as c300 series!!)

i know for a fact this works with the t5500, but i have not tried any other processors.

i bought the motherboard on ebay for about 130 bucks. the cpu i scored for cheap, but gave it to a friend. why? i put the old motherboard back in and sold it for 200 bucks.

anybody interested in this motherboard for 100 shipped (continental USA)? if i find the t2250, i might throw the in for 5 bucks.

email me @ patrick.gallaher[at]gmail[dot]com if you're interested. this is a huge find for those wanting to go core 2 duo and don't want to spend 500 bucks on a new laptop.

at the same time, might as well replace that cooling fan. many on ebay.

I have C300EA with 945 chipset (Motherboard was replaced by HP about a year ago). I'm tempted to try upgrading the CPU but i'm a little confused what is the best processor that is supported by BIOS in this board?
What do you have as current? Any particular reason for wanting to upgrade the CPU?

cheers ...

I have Celeron 420. I installed 4gb of ram recently and I was thinking of upgrading to Core 2 Duo to get some performance boost and to be able to install 64-bit W7. What would be the latest Core 2 Duo that is supported by bios on 945 chipset?
