Purchasing an Alienware soon! BUT, what's better? mALX or m9700 - Page 2

Both the mALX and m9700 are exceptional machines, it's just a matter of size and weight here :P
The Dell E1705 and the XPS M1710 are pretty good choices as well, they're both solid machines, and the 7900 GS card on the E1705 can be overclocked to pretty insane numbers.
Personally, I would go for the m9700. Not only is it an amazing performer, it's also a very stable/solid platform as mentioned by Hammerhead. I don't know how much of a multitasker you are, but quite honestly the Turion ML-44 should be pretty sufficient for most things that you'd run on Windows.

True that, I was first looking at the Dell Inspiron 9600 or whatever it is, I forgot what number it was but I was looking at Dell around August/September until I decided to go with alienware. For me, doesn't matter about weight between the mALX and M9700 because I can carry a lot of them cause i'm very strong and I work out a lot (ok, ill stop the bragging now).

But yeah, I'm still thinking about the mALX and M9700, a very hard choice.

If you are concerned about the graphics power between the two machines, all I can say is that Ive run FEAR, Oblivion, CS:S, CoH all at max settings with very good frame rates. All above 40 fps which is pretty damn smooth.

As for portability Ive got a friend with an mALX and I damn sure would not like to lug that around. For one the mALX backpack is huge comparded to the 17" model, I make fun of my friend when he puts it on because it looks like hes going camping with that huge mALX backpack.

That and its not very portable in the fact that you HAVE to baby it because the glossy surface scratches very easily

For me, doesnt matter if its 25 inches, I can bring it, haha. But yeah, mALX lacks portability because hey, its huge BUT powerful and sexy looking so I don't really mind.

As for sexy, I think the sleek design of the m9700 is a bit better than the mAXL. It's got curves, and the screen can fold down 180 from opening. In my circumstances I'm just going to wait for my 1yr warranty is up and have my friend paint the case white with silver ghost alien heads on it.

In regards to power, the case that alienware uses is also used by pretty much every custom gaming computer company. You can probably find a cheaper price for a mAXL copy, the only thing you will have to deal with is support and warranty. For one I just got off from a live chat with alienware support asking about upgrading my go 7900gs from the 256mb versions to the 512's and the lady I was talking to answered all my questions quickly and without a lot of problems. In terms of being exclusive, the mALX is pretty darn insane, but the only thing is the case that is used is just a nicely airbrushed version of many variations. The case for the m9700 isn't available to everyone. It is a little more rare and heck I'm gonna have mine painted soon enough.

Yeah, I've talked to Alienware support before and they did answer all my questions, I was very very impressed with their customer support.

I noticed that Hypersonic has a 19'' SLI, maybe that would suit you? It's slightly cheaper than the mALX and can be painted in some really cool designs. How much does the mALX weight anyways, Im sure it couldn't be too bad for carrying around.
Are there any laptops with dualcore and SLI?
the laptop itself is 15lbs, the whole box with everything inside when i picked mine up weighed 40lbs.

A 17" laptop can be a pain to carry around, the mALX is huge. The screen is a 19", but there's a large surround so it's larger than that. The new version is slotting in a 20.1" screen in the same case...

I wouldn't want to carry it around mainly due to the paint.

The core 2 duo doesn't yet support SLI, but intel is working on that now apparently. There is a dual core version of the Clevo platform the mALX is based upon with a turion X2 processor inside.

I really don't think it'll make a huge difference though for gaming as games are single threaded, and the SLI chipset does all the work through a single core.

I've heard about that new 20 inch Aurora mALX, you know when that will be released because I can wait before purchasing it, I have time to wait for better upgrades.

I don't know, but Clevo released the platform recently. It uses the turion X2 dual core processor, and it's got the 20.1" screen in the same case as the current model.

I'm probably guessing alienware will release the new 20 inch in a month or so, then when that happens, they will start promoting and handing out deals like what they're doing with the Aurora m9700 right now.

Isn't this screen no different then other ones, or does this one scratch more easily? I thought the reason for glossy screens is that they are added protection. So is the mALX screen glossy screens not as good as m9700 screens?

Good Lord, a 20" laptop? Now all they need to do is waterproof it and I could use it as a secondary boat rudder...

Someone is selling a protection wrap for the Aurora mALX (19 inches) but since the 20 inch is coming out soon and I might get that, that renders the 19 inch protection wrap kind of useless. But, i have no clue about the glossyness part, you can ask 357Magnum about that because he has an mALX and he observed it pretty well and wrote a really good review about it as well.

No im talking about the airbrushed finish. The paint is glossed over, you have to keep the thing in a felt bag so it doesnt get scratched. Im not joking when I say youve got to baby the mALX

The screens are glossy, and durable. The previous poster was speaking of the glossy airbrushed paint and clearcoat on the outside of the case.

It's the same case as the current mALX, it just has a smaller surround trim piece so the screen is a little bit bigger.

The case is the same size, it's just got a 20.1" screen in there with thinner trim than the current 19" screen with a thicker bezel trim piece.
