IR port on the M5750 disabled?

Ok so here something that caught me off guard. I have just purchased an Alienware M5750 and the IR port is not working. So I contact tech support and they tell me because I did not buy it with XP Media Center Edition it does not work and I will need to purchase an external USB IR. Ok so what is the deal? Can some one tell me how I can get the IR to work? Do they really disable the IR? I can see the IR device inside the computer when I remove the access cover for the second hard drive. Thanks for anyone that can help me with this. David

hmm i don't think it comes disabled, I've used my pda to transfer picture/word documents over IR all the time.

check your control panel.

I'll check it out once I get home.

what are you trying to do anyway?

It does not show up in the control panel and I do not see it in the Bios Setup. I use my cell phone IR to update the calendar and phone book. I just have been having so many problems with a brand new machine that I took out of the box and I almost have everything working and now I am working on the last couple of issue. That it’s take a deep breath. When I am done I will post my bad dream. Thanks for your help!

Hmmm... I don't know much about IR, but my m9700 has it, and it came with MCE, so it's set up to work with the MCE remote control.

It doesn't list in the device manager either, though windows says it should.

In the start menu, under help and support there is a "verify IR support on a computer" topic, but it says to check the bios for Irda support. You say there's nothing in the bios...

It may be that AW's bios doesn't include that option to minimize customer caused issues, so you may want to look into the base manufacturer of the platform to see if there's a bios out there with the option to enable IR. I think the 5750 is a fujitsu-seimens base platform. It's possible that it's in the system, but not plugged in if AW doesn't use it except with MCE.

Thanks for the information! I have gone to the fujitsu-seimens web site and found the machine. It has an update for the BIOS ver 1.7. Now I need to get up the nerve to install it and see if it will give me options. Also you are right I receive the e-mail from AWCS and they told me that it only works with MCE. I wish they would have stated that on the web site as I have seen on other manufactures web pages. Onward and forward! Thanks for your help!
