Upgrading graphics void warranty?

Thread Starter
Would the warranty be voided on my XPS Gen 2 if I upgrade the graphics card from a GeForce Go 6800 Ultra 256MB to a GeForce Go 7800 GTX 256MB? I didn't buy it directly from Dell, but from eBay.

Keep the old card and pop it back in for warranty issues.

Uh-oh, lol. I sold my old graphics card already > <. So, that would mean my warranty would be voided since I don't have the original graphics card?

Not sure about that. I guess it would depend on the issue and whether they notice it, when they open it up.

Consider the warranty on the video card void. As for other components I don't think there will be an issue as long as you didn't have to do any physical modification to the system to get the new card working. Read the Magnusson - Moss Warranty act and understand your rights under the law.

I just recently sent my 9300 in for repairs and I had upgraded from a 6800 go to a 7800 gtx go. During repairs they actually replaced my 7800 gtx go with a new one cause of heat related issues, but then I did buy the graphics card from dell. I don't know if thats going to be any help to you.

as long as you have them note that you have a 7800gtx in it when its shipped to them it should not be an issue at all, people forget order numbers all the time, or get things as gifts. Dell is pretty good about that stuff.

What about when upgrading CPU?

If something went south due to OC, could you remove the OC cpu and replace the original one? Hypothetically would they be able to tell?

Thank you thread necromancer....

In response to your question, if you upgrade the CPU and leave it alone then you won't have to worry about the warranty on other parts (screen, motherboard, video card, etc) BUT if you bork your Laptop Overclocking that CPU and mess up the motherboard or other components, your warranty would definitely be void.

Also discussing ways to deceive or defraud Dell or any other notebook manufacturer on this board is against the rules. Consider this your warning.

I actually had a nice little conversation with Dell regarding this issue. They replaced my XPS M170 with an M1710 beacuse of recurring issues, and I recieved a 7900gs (to replace my 7800gtx) in my newer system. I was pretty angry at first, so I called Dell. They seemed to be understanding, but they were pretty firm at denying my request for a better video card. Eventually a manager came on the phone. I eventually asked them my options, and they told me that I could replace the 7900gs with a 7900gtx, but it would be my expense. He stated that the warranty would remain intact, besides the new video card. I also asked about overclocking (for anybody thats curious), and he stated that if my card was damaged do to overclocking, I would have to replace the card, but the rest of the laptops warranty would remain intact.
