Dell Inspiron 6000 Wi Fi not activating

Hell everyone,

I am new to this site to ask a question concerning my Dell Inspiron 6000. I have a INTEL Wireless card installed and a Lynksys Wireless Router in my home. I am only 15 feet away from the base unit and sometimes my wi-fi does not activate and my screen is completely blank. While it is blank, i cannot do anything or make it activate. I have to completely turn my laptop off and turn on again to get it to recognize. Does anyone know what my problem is with this computer or is it the wirelss connection? Sometimes (75%) it recognizes, the green wi-fi signal lights up and all is good. The other 25% it does not light up and the screen is blank. All help will be very very appreciated. I am so frustrated wondering if my screen will turn on when i open my laptop or if it will remain blank. Again, thank you so much for everyones help.

Ron

Can you give us some more details such as laptop spec, age, software installed, wifi card type, router model. I have a Inspiron 6400 connecting to a linksys router without any issues so I want to find out how similar your setup is to mine.

It is a 2005 Model with a Intel PRO Set/ Wireless Software 9.0.0.1 Version 9.0.1.57, I have windows XP Installed. The Linksys router model #WRT54GS and is about 9 months old. I am not sure if this will help you solve my problem but i again appreciate it greatly.

Thank you

When you say that sometimes your WiFi does not activate, do you mean on your laptop i.e. you turn on WiFi but it doesn't start searching for wireless networks etc.?

What i am saying is that when i open my laptop, it is supposed to search for my wireless network. Sometimes it does, the wi fi light turns on, my screen illuminates, and i am able to log on and use my laptop. Then sometimes when i open it, the screen stays dark, the wi fi light does not turn on, and i have to turn the laptop completely off and restart it to gain access to it. Sometimes the wi fi picks up and sometimes it doesnt. That is my concern.

Thanks

Okay, I think we can eliminate the router as a issue then. It is something specific on your laptop. If this behaviour only happens when you try WiFi, I would suggest the first thing to do is uninstall the WiFi driver then do a reinstall of it - ensure you get the latest version of it from Dells website.

I've got an Inspiron 6400 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network card and use a Linksys WRT54GS and have also been having connection and drop-out problems in the last couple of weeks.

It has all been stable since I got it in May, but when I updated the network driver a couple of weeks ago I started having the problems, then I upgraded the router's firmware from 1.50.5 to 1.50.9 and was still having problems, even when I rolled back the network driver. I installed the new network driver yesterday (10.5.1.69) and the wireless was performing better than ever, until I rebooted and it's still not connecting to the network on every boot, sometimes it connects like normal other times it doesn't and I have to choose repair. It's really annoying.

I started a thread about my original problems that might have information that can help you too:

Things have been stable with both the old driver and the latest one recently and I've upgraded my router's firmware to 1.51.0, but it still doesn't connect to the wireless network instantly at start up, which is used to. I was using the other notebook a couple of nights ago and observed that by the time Windows had finished loading the desktop, which only took several seconds, the wireless connection had been made quickly and silently without any system tray notifications or connection animations. Mine on the other hand tries to do the same thing, but instead of connecting to the wireless network silently I get the no connection system tray icon and a bubble that says: "Wireless Network Connection is not connected Wireless network unavailable" It then takes 30-60 seconds to try to connect. Mine used to connect quickly and silently just like I described the other notebook above. A clean install is getting ever closer.
