Acer Aspire 5100-5022

Thread Starter
Good afternoon,
I have been comparing laptops over the past few weeks and I have come across an Acer 5100, dual core, 120 GB HD, 1GB RAM, DVD RW, for $798. Is anyone on this forum currnetly using this particular notebook? If so are you pleased with it? Any feedback on this system and configuration would certainly be appreciated.

Regards,
JW

I have a 5100 AMD 64x2, 120 GB HD, 2GB RAM, DVD RW, after rebate $749.00 (and I got the rebate). No problems with it, I am running Windows Vista RC2 on it. Does not find a driver for the PCI Flash memory (whatever that is) and the built in camera does not have software that works yet. Other than that Vista works great

Did you end up buying the 5100-5022? I've been looking at it also. I'm assuming you saw it in Walmart? I'm confused on one thing though...on Walmart's website, it says that there are integrated graphics, but lower down in the specs/features, it says there is an ATI X1300 graphics chip w/ 128 dedicated graphics and upto 384 shared. I was just wondering if this is true or not.

Hey, I called the Acer and they said the graphics card included in this model is going to be ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, however there are many cases when the manufacture changes certain parts inside the notebook for a retailer. I am planning on buying this computer also so if you find any information please let me know. Thank You

It uses the X1100 chipset which means its a mobile chipset. But i still think it will have the X1300, or else it wouldnt be advertised.

Here's a link to the 5100-5022 on Walmart's website http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=5280740 Its weird because in the description it says "the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 chipset with robust integrated graphics displays stunning images." Then down below in Additional Features, it talks about the X1300. If it does have the X1300, I would think that this laptop is a fantastic value for only $748. I unfortunately won't find out if this is true or not until closer to Xmas as this is a gift my wife is giving me but if anyone else has info beforehand that would be appreciated.

Im thinking about getting one too. I'll go to WalMart and check it out this week.

Great...let me know. I went to Walmart too but they didn't have a description out and also the box seemed like a generic 5100 box. I've been looking for a while and was pretty much set on the Dell E1505 or the E1501 but the 1505 ended up being a little too much and the 1501 didn't have enough features. This one hopefully is juuuuuuuuuuuust right.

Whats the video driver say after it installs?
I was thinking the same thing....hopefully its just the 1100 chipset but has a x1300 gpu. I don't know how Walmart could mess it up that bad and keep it on their site. So i think its right

Well Walmart did mess up and they finally fixed it.....I knew it was too good to be true. Now the hunt starts all over for a lower priced laptop w/ dedicated graphics

Hello! I am thinking about purchasing the Acer Aspire 5100-5022 also and wanted to get some opinions on it as well. My questions are what are the best features about this laptop and what are the worst features about this laptop? that you like. I am planning on buying one in January I am just not sure by then if it will have the new os on it or not. Does this perticular laptop come with Recovery cd's? Does it have a built in wireless network card?

I want to learn all I can before buying it.

thanks,
seastar

According to these specs...
http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0246051
It does come with built-in wireless.

It seems that the Acer Aspire's do not come with recovery CDs (at least none that I've bought). You will have the option to burn recovery disks that will create an image of the current drive. It requires you to save the recovery partition though, so be careful if you are deleting partitions and moving things together... say for NTSF and Windows XP Pro.

Thanx for your expertise. I was wondering do all Acer laptops come with a partioned HD? Does Acer have good Tech support? Do you think it would be better to get one with win xp media edition or wait till win vista comes out and get one then? out of your opinion is Acer better than a HP laptop?

Help me please to compare this Acer laptop with the Compaq Presario V5315WM-B

Thank you!
Yes it seems that all of them come with partitioned HD, on the assumption that the C drive is used for Windows / apps and the D drive is for data. The C drive is the one that is formated during the restoration while the D drive is not touched.

Assuming you get a PC now from most known stores, I'd expect you'd get a coupon to receive an upgrade to Vista. Go ahead and get the computer now if you need it.

I can't say if the Acer is better than HP. Would need to see specs for both together to compare

Hey All,
I just bought the 5100 from Walmart, so far I think it is a great value for the money. I just sold my Acer 5672, the main thing that the 5100 lacks is firewire, s-video and Bluetooth. I am very impressed with the side by side comparison between the two. The onboard ATI 1100 works well. I ran Tomb Raider on both Acer’s and they were equal in all aspects. Although the 5672 started Tomb Raider a little faster. The 5100 does everything internet with the same speed as the 5672 using the built in wireless. Altheros vs. Intel. I will miss the slot loader and the camera software on the 5672. One thing is for sure the 5100 runs as cool or cooler then any notebook I have ever owned. This Notebook offers the most bang for your buck . Specs as listed on Walmarts Web Page.
