Battery problems?

The battery LED indicator that's next to the HD and power LED indicator on my i9400, has been acting weird lately. First of all, when I have both the battery and the power adapter plugged into the laptop, it's been flashing green all the time. It's like 'flash --> wait 10 secs. --> flash again'. So it's blinking on and off. This happens even when the computer is turned off. By either taking out the battery or unplugging the power adapter, I can stop the LED from flashing.

but today I noticed something even more weird. When I turned on my laptop this evening, it started flashing like "green ---- orange ----- orange" every 2 secends or so. So I figured something had to be seriously wrong and I removed the battery, which seemed to solve the problem.

But anyways, what can be causing this to happen?

Well it could be several issues.

how long have you had the laptop?

Have you run Notebook Hardware Control to see what the wear level % is on the battery?

It could be a defective pwoer supply, though the blinking every 10 seconds usually just indicates it is trickle charging...No idea on the Green--->Orange----->Orange though I would think that means the battery is very low.

Perhaps the power brick is having issues & cannot put out enough power to satisfy the power requirements of runing the laptop & charging it.

I have had the laptop for about 7 months or so, since February 2006. And i haven't run any notebook hardware control yet, but I might do it. It's very weird if the battery is actually worn out already, cause I haven't been running the notebook from battery very much. Maby 10-20 times in about 7 months. Hmmm, well I am pretty sure that the battery is fully charged. I charged it about 9 days ago and so, and I haven't unplugged the power adapter with the laptop on since then. So I doubt the battery power is low. Anymore input on this?

Hey Cookie,

First off the blinking every 10 seconds of the Green light just basically means that the battery is full and that the adapter is trickle charging as SolApathy stated.
As for the Green-Orange-Orange thing, this means that your battery needs to be replaced, this started happening to me a few weeks ago and i've been told i need a new battery, if you press the button on the battery you will see a series of diagnostic lights flash which Dell will use to tell what exactly is the probelm, luckily for you though i was told that if the battery is less than a year old then Dell will replace the battery under the standard warranty program... so give Dell a call and see what they say.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the reply.

Okay I see, so the battery might need replacing...
But I have only experienced the green - orange - orange thing once, and then I took out my battery and left it for about 3 days, then I inserted it again, and it seemed to work perfectly again. What could have been causing this? Is the battery getting unstable or something?

I had the same thing where by the problem seemed to resolve itself, however it reared its ugly head just a few days later and become a consistent. I would suggest telling Dell your problem and if they try to say that the problem has obviously resolved itself you would best to tell them you dont feel happy to have what is clearly an unstable battery in system...

Hmm, I see...

Well, I think I'll wait a bit and see what happens. If it occurs again, I'll contact Dell right away. I have about 90 days left of my guarantee, so I'm not going to stress this (yet)...

Anyways, thank you for your replies.
