Won't boot, LCD blank

The system has been going into Stand-by from time to time as if the lid were closed on the notebook. I've noticed that from time to time the LCD would be dark until I flicked the small switch at the hinge line on the RT hand side. Now however the system will not boot up, the LCD is completely blank & dark, the HDD indicator, num, cap & scroll lock lights flash once, HDD light stays illuminated for 15 to 20 seconds then goes dark. After approx 30 to 40 second the fan will kick in.
I've tried plugging in an external monitor, no image.
Someone told me that they had a new battery cause a similar problem on another laptop. Didn't make sense to me but I tried the old battery with no difference. I've since thoroughly cleaned the system per the instructions on the sticking posting on this forum. Wasn't anywhere near as dirty as the one pictured. And the cleaning made no difference.

Any ideas?

Hi there, I had a similar problem before, and was able to solve it by opening the bottom of the case, the memory section I believe, and removing the CMOS battery, it looks like a small watch battery. Wait 10 seconds or so, then put it back in - this should reset the CMOS. If this happened in a desktop, I would just use the CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard, but I wasn't able to find one on the mobo of the 8790, but taking out the battery and replacing it seems to do the same.

CAUTION - there's a slim chance this could cause damage, but it fixed my problem and I've seen no side effects.

PS. Is it giving you a short beep tone after you press the power button? If so, it might be something else - the memory might have gone bad, if its this case, remove one of the memory sticks, then turn the system on, if that doesn't work, replace the stick you removed, take out the other one, and turn it on. If the system works after you remove one of them, you know that stick went bad. I also had this happen to me.. *SIGH* the 8790 had so many problems...

Good luck!

Standby on the 8790 is a hit or miss type of thing. Disable that and follow Vic's advice.

I think I'll try the memory fix first as it's simple to remove one stick at a time & retry a boot.
There are no beeps.
I was reading on the Phoenix web site that pressing the insert key immediately after power up would reset the Cmos. Would that be the same as removing & reinstalling the battery? How long do these batteries last anyway? Maybe I should replace it.
I'm at work at the moment. I'll try these things at lunch. Thanks for the reply!

My Clevo D870P (=Sager 8790) did not boot some days ago. Found this thread and removed one of the RAM. It booted after that. Put the same RAM back in and it still booted!

Awesome, just found this thread and the RAM removal worked for me. My 8790 died 5 years ago with some data I thought I'd never get back.

Like one of the other posters, I got no beep. Powering up the computer would cause the CD drive to activate, but not the hard disks. The machine would not POST and nothing appeared on the screen. I took out the top memory stick (tip: use a screwdriver or, better yet, something plastic like a pen cap to disengage the "lock" on each side). The system booted right up!

It still suffers from the overheated motherboard issue with artifacting on the screen. But I'm very happy to have access to some of the data I never backed up.

Thanks!

Also I was able to reinstall the removed RAM and the machine boots normally again.

Can't beleive I didn't try this 5 years ago.
