wifi woes in sourceforge...

so after gentoo has been giving me beef with the kernel i deciced to try my luck with SMGL (sourcemage gnu/linux) and after the quick base install (unlike gentoo where most files/apps of basic system are built during the install, they are simply straight copied from cd and then later rebuilt if you so desire..which makes the install much quicker than that of gentoo) i got madwifi (although a bit of an older version) installed and it recognizes my card, but when i do "iwlist ath0 scan" it comes up with no results. hmm....

so i reinstalled the latest version (just downloaded fresh off madwifi.org) and a quick reboot and modprobe later we got still no love....hmm... i don't recall seeing any errors during compiling the module so that shouldn't have been an issue...what can possibly be wrong?

EDIT: title meant to say "wifi woes with sourcemage" ....oops! if a mod can tweak that for me?

I'm really starting to feel bad... with so many users having wifi issues in linux I feel guilty that mine has always worked perfectly, but I never use it.

typically i dont have issues with my configuration since the madwifi team is doing a great job on the atheros drivers, however in some rare cases (such as this)...sh*t happens

well....got some good news and some bad news...or 2 bad...whichever.

i installed ndiswrapper and the latest xp drivers from gigabyte's website and it loaded up nice, but once again "iwlist wlan0 scan" pulls "No scan results" so now i am thinking maybe my original misfortune has little to do with the config of madwifi itself and more to do with perhaps something being wrong with the kernel....

well...flipped through the kernel menuconfig real quick and i see absolutely nothing that could be getting in the way....hmm

Hi abf,
Have you considered trying out Kanotix? I used to be a Gentoo-kind of guy, compiling everything from source, etc. but didn't really notice any huge performance benefits after trying it for almost a year. So I jumped ship and started using Debian / Kanotix instead and haven't looked back.

As for your MadWifi problem, I can only point you to this wiki page:
http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo Hope that helps

ryank....lol...i guess first things first welcome to the nbf linux forums, secondly you've told me nothing new, and if you read up on my history i used to be a big debian guy, but i am trying this gentoo thing for a change...

and btw, as much as i think kanotix is a great project and kano is a cool guy, its actually one of my LEAST favorite debian distros... i kinda like ubuntu for simplicity and community sake but its just not optimized enough (i383..ugh!)... as you can see from my sig Elive was my previous distro.... to be honest, love it, but some of the little things just kept getting on my nerves...but anywhoo...i appreciate your concerns but i am tiered of debian for a little bit and wanna try somethign else.

No problem That's the beauty of Linux - different applications, different distros, so you can pick and choice the one you like. Heck, you can even build your own distro if you want to
