Screen artifacts on NP8790

Hi.
Have had this NP8790 for 2-1/2 years. Trying to decide whether it's worth keeping and investing more $ in. Can anyone please give me some insight into what causes this:

It has been getting worse lately. I have updated/uninstalled/re-installed drivers. I have uninstalled Catalyst. I have turned off 3D acceleration.

Machine has the ATI Radeon 9700. Initially I thought it was related to Firefox, but now sometimes it happens even after a restart.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Read up on the threads all about artifacting and you'll find a million and one different answers on possible fixes (other than the obvious of replacing the motherboard) http://www.notebookforums.com/thread56210.html is the longest thread with the most information in it.

And that is exactly why I now have a new computer so I don't have to worry about artificing ever again.

Clean out the unit (there should be a stick about how to do this). Don't forget the area under the keyboard. Also try ATITOOL to set the GPU/Mem speeds to a lower setting as the factory setting were a bit too high originally.

Thanks for your help. I did tear it apart and clean it again, which I have done several times before. However, I hadn't included under the KB, although it didn't seem bad. Sadly, no improvement. I played with the Graphics Aperture setting in BIOS, but that didn't help either. D/L'd ATITool, but confess that I don't really know what I'm doing with it yet. Oh, well. Maybe it's time... Thanks again. DW

Definitely read through the artifacting threads that Michelle posted. Might be long and boring, but there's nuggets of info in there for 8790 owners. I agree w/ G that a sticky needs to be made about the cleaning of 8790s. An artifacting FAQ probably wouldn't hurt, either.

If you're not getting any love once you've cleaned everything out and get ATiTool running with lowered settings, then it's possible that your video RAM is toast or your motherboard is FUBAR. Both completely possible (and I happened to have enough luck to go through both situations), so that's why reading through the artifacting threads is important- it'll arm you with information necessary to get to the bottom of how far gone your system is. Hopefully, with a little nudging by ATiTool, you'll be back in business.

Thank you. I'll spend some more time working with ATITool in the hopes that it will make a difference.

What I did to get rid of the artifacting was underclock it with ATI Tools, and I could play Battlefield 2 beautifully.
