I notice these days that when never I boot up my laptop,my hard drive wil run super busy for some time with the HD led blicking crazily and programs start slowly. So I just did a boot up system diagnostics and it showed:
DST Short Test: Fail
Error Code 1000-0146. Msg: Unit 0: DST Log contains previous errors.

Then I ran the hard drive test with the system diagnostics software too,it shows error when it came up with the S.M.A.R.T test.My hard drive is the stock drive of 120g,5400rpm,which I just got in mid Semptember!

Can anybody help with this?Thanks!

This is a HDD error code that implies your HD will cease to be with you much longer. BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT DATA NOW! Call Dell and get that baby replaced asap.

Omg...!Actually my 500g external HDD is on the way right now.Since my harddrive is 5400rpm,can I just ask Dell to replace it with a new one of 7200rpm with less capacity?

Nope, they only exchange like for like. The only reason they would change it would be if they have none left of the model you are using.

Really? I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm working on a Dell i6000 right now for a guy I know and it won't boot because of a disk read error. I tried a
Code:
chkdsk /p /r
via the recovery console and it said "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." and wouldn't finish after 52%. I ran the diagnostics tool through the BIOS and it was getting a DST error as well. If the hard drive is screwed, I will just go ahead and tell him he needs a new one instead of trying to reinstall XP. Only thing about it is that I can still boot Knoppix and get all of his data like music and videos to still work.

Oh,I've already requested the replacement of my HDD from Dell.
Hmm,I can still boot up my Windows properly, play music and video properly too.But the drive is dying I guess...

Yeah, its kind of a foreshadowing of whats to come for a lot of people. Just about everyone that has gotten this error has had the drive fail on them. Its due to an abundance of bad sectors on the disk itself. This is why you have a lot of disk access happening... its from programs trying to piece themselves together through these bad sectors. Try running a THOROUGH SCANDISK in your drive options. Check both boxes for the options there, "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". It can't hurt to try it. Usually, however, the DST error usually only occurs when the drive has too many errors to correct, therefore blocking you from doing a simple low level format or even repairing the sectors to begin with. In any case, the best option here is to replace the drive, because failure at this point is more than likely imminent.
