My next project is to build myself a nice little Linux box to see if I can break away from MS for some non-gaming needs.
First four needs are simple in windows, just don't know if Linux has them:
1. A torrent program that has RSS feed for auto-download
2. A Prorgam that will copy a website
3. A Program that will record audio on a set schedule
4. Remote access
1. The torrent program needs to be able to read a RSS and download files, if it could send me an email that would be a plus. I found Azerua for JAVA that does all of this but am not sure how that will run in Linux. Nothing illegal, just downloading some audio files from friends who have a radio show; averaging 200MB a day.
2. The website program is going to be used to download files from three websites I visit and will have audio, video and archieve files I want downloaded. A program for windows I used in the past is Web Copier Pro (http://www.maximumsoft.com/products/...overview.html).
3. The audio recording program is going to record radio shows from the line-in jack. Three shows a day at different times, 7 days a week.
4. Windows has gotomypc, not sure if there is something in Linux or not that will allow remote access/control. Basically want to check in on the Torrent manager and transfer so files to and from my laptop when on the road. Possibly do the occasional reboot or fix issues if they arise.
My reason for Linux is so far doing these three things on one Windows machines seems to cause issues with Windows freezing from time to time and I want to see if Linux is as stable as my friends claim it to be. My Window system stay stable for a few days but I am on the road for weeks to months at a time and never had a problem free trip with them.
I was thinking of getting a low-end Intel Core 2 Dual, 1 to 2 Gigs of Ram, Video card will be on the low end (maybe a Nvidia 6600) and a 750GB hard drive.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of programs that would do what I need in Linux.
I hear Fedora is suppose to be a good distrobution of Linux, I would assume I would use the x86_64 version with a core 2 duo has EM64T. Done a bit of Google searching and find the whole Linux experience a bit overwhelming for a noob.
Any input is much appreciated or if you know a Linux forum that is as noob friendly as this site is that would be great too.
