Why no onboard 10/100/1000 NIC for the E1705?

Because they have to give you a reason to buy the XPS line of systems.

It's the same thing they did with the 9300 and M170.

10/100/1000 vs 10/100 isn't really that big of a deal anyway.

Do you plan to hook your laptop up to a 10/100/1000 wired network?
If so, all the other "nodes" on the network support 10/100/1000 speeds as well?
Do you transfer lots of large (in the GBs) files between two computers a lot?

If the answer is no to any of those, then you really wont notice 10/100 vs 10/100/1000 differences.

Most of us use wireless connections primarily anyhow, so don't particularly care about the NIC

If you really want, I'm sure you can find a GigE ExpressCard somewhere.
