anyone have 4G in their 1710?

Hi all

I've tried searching, but "4g" "4gb" etc. is too short of a term, and isn't turning up any hits.

I am aware that on XP you can only get 3.25 g, but that would be an improvement for me (I am using SQL server, vmware, etc.). I know newegg had the transcend 2G modules for about $600 ea, but they have since pulled them.

So, the question, anyone have 4G in their 1710? If so, spill

I have 4GB in my E1705 (same as M1710). As far as cost goes, it depends where you buy them. I've bought the last four of my 2GB modules on ebay for anywhere from $189 each to $259 each. I just bought a matched pair for $189 each. Not that expensive.

And, you are correct. The computer sees only about 3.25GB of the total 4GB.

You obviously hang out with the wrong crowd!!

I just got two for $189 each on ebay. Tested for 24hrs with Windows Memory Diagnostic, and work flawlessly.

Never any more than 3.3GB. When I did a BIOS upgrade on my E1705, I got a few more MB's than the previous version, but I think it topped out at around 3.3GB in XP PRO. Vista (x86) was no different.

Thanks Lancorp

Could you link your auction #, or PM it to me? I would love to be able to trust your seller. I found some modules but I'm not sure they're right... Thanks

of topic a bit but would mixing a 2gb module with a 1 gb module affect speed (dual channel) and wouldn't that be a better trade-off to geting a pair 2gb modules? It would be cheaper and only 300mb less -as reported. I know the macbooks pros can be maxed out on memory like that.

That is a valid combination, and I think speed-wise, it's dual-channel for the first 2GB, then single channel for the remaining 1GB.

Any noticeable heat increase?

Regardless of any benchies, is the performance increase noticeable to you?

Thx.

The DIMMS have to be the same size in order to operate in dual channel mode.

With that said the benchmarks I have seen show little to no difference between single and dual channel modes.

No noticeable heat increase that I can tell...

Performance-wise, for most applications, the difference between 2 and 3GB (or 4GB) is not that noticeable.
But, for the cost I got the 2GB's for, it's nice to have!!

Would I pay normal prices for the addt'l RAM? Probably not.

I thought both channels had to be the same size and speed for dual-channel to work. If you mix, then it operates in single-channel mode.

That is more likely the case. I remember reading something about this scenario on Apple Mac's, and the concensus was that the overlapping memory range ran faster than the single mode range.

Not sure it really matters, either!

i read on dells website that it takes a 64 bit os and proc to utilize 4gb of 667mHz ram. from: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=DYCWRS2&s=dhs

::::*Systems configured with 4GB memory or more: The total amount of available memory will be less than 4GB. The amount less depends on the actual system configuration. To fully utilize 4GB or more of memory requires a 64-bit enabled processor and 64-bit OS.::::

4gb is the limit of 32bit processing. Not the os or bios problem. Its a computing problem.

Ahh Lancorp, the link you sent me was for 533MHz ram... perhaps that's why it's so cheap?

I have 4Gb on my 1710 = 667mhz.
The latest BIOS allows you to see 3.25 gb - see attachment.
The older one you would only get 3.0Gb - same was true on my D820.

It shows 3.25 on Vista too.
Hope this helps.
