As has been stated in other threads here, the performance difference between DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 is marginal, at best. Although with 667 the clock speed is faster, the CAS latency is also longer (5). So, although 667 is clocked faster, the higher latency slows it down compared to 533 (with a latency of 4).

Benchmarks might show a neglible increase in performance with the 667, but, in my opinion, not worth the extra cost.

FWIW, I did buy two 667 modules from another ebayer @ $260 each. I'm perfectly happy buying 533 RAM with the faster (shorter) latency.

Thanks Lancorp

I do note that Dell offers the 4G upgrade @533 for significantly less than the 4G 667 too. I may stick with the 667 as I have a 2.33G, which I OC to 3GHz for some things.

Just to put things into a better perspective regarding the cost vs. performance difference, crucial.com has the 2GB DDR2-533 SODIMM for $789 and the same DDR-667 for $839. Only a $50 difference. (reseller cost at crucial.com for the same modules is only a $15 difference!) Given the fact the ones I bought for $189 were 533 didn't bother me at all. I saved $600 per module!!! Dell's upgrade prices on the 2GB are unrealistic.

I found some info regarding the mixing of differnt capcaity memory modules with I9xx chipsets. The memory controller features flex memory that can do asymetric dual channel mode, which basically enables interleaving between 2 modules for the size equal to that of the smallest module (-small size pdf or full i945pe pdf.) it may not be as fast as symetric dual channel but as reported here there is no slowing down (it's not at great test but they said it). there's some more discussion I found on google and some on apple's site.

Nice, won two samsung modules for $259 ea. 4g (3.2) of 667MHz memory for $518! My advice to anyone here, cruise ebay carefully, as Lancorp said, there are a lot of decent deals out there.
