DX10 GPUs soon?

Hello everyone. I've been browsing over the new and upcoming Asus models for a replacement for my W3V and I see what look to be some great upcoming models. The only thing I've noticed that they lack is a Direct X 10 GPU.

With Vista on its way in a month or so, and many models like the G series launching, I would expect them to come with DX10 compliant GPUs such as the Nvidia 88xx series. Is it possible that many of the upcoming and existing (A8Js, W3J) will be refreshed with DX10 GPUs? I'm told that most of the big, popular brands such as Dell will be unveiling DX10 mobile GPU models soon, but with all these upcoming specs finalized (G series?) I'm worried that ASUS won't be able to compete. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

dx10 cards for notebooks are not going to be out for at least next year. The main problem is huge heat from GPU. browse forums there is whole bunch of this stuff there.

Well, Asus has a history of being used as the "test platform" for new technologies (i.e. first Centrino, first notebook to take advantage of Vista's miniature outside screen thing, etc), but they tend to roll out their production models a couple months behind most other brands, at least from what I've seen over the last couple years. So yes, I can assure you that Asus will indeed have DirectX 10 graphic cards in their notebooks at some point not too far from when ATI & Nvidia reveal their entire high-end to low-end DirectX 10 mobile graphics card lineups, but I don't know when that's going to happen. The G1 is coming out very soon and it will have an Nvidia GeForce Go 7700 with 512 MB of dedicated RAM. If you want a DirectX 10 graphics card, you'll have to wait a bit longer.

Also, Asus tends to stay away from the top-end graphics cards in their notebooks due (in my opinion) to the fact that they eat battery life like crazy and typically require thicker notebooks than Asus wants to put out.

You will probably see Native direct X 10 cards in notebooks with the Vista Launch. I have read a few things and all point to the same thing.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll be waiting a little bit longer. I don't care about the extreme upper end of the video spectrum, but I would like to see a nice 512mb "8700" series in a 14 inch notebook.

Oh, here's something that just came to me. Maybe Milestone, Sasha, or Djembe will know. It seems like Asus puts ATI video cards in their "pretty" models like the W3 and W2, and even the G2 (I think?) I was under the impression that these ran hotter than comparably equipped Nvidia models, so I'd think Nvidia would be a better choice for the thinner, more aesthetically pleasing notebooks? Is there any chance of switching these over to Nvidia?

I admit I'm a little biased because I like to run Linux and Nvidia hardware makes it much, much easier to get 3d performance there. ATI support is in the pits.

Looking forward to a new ASUS soon!

As you know the A8js has an Nvidia card, but i guess you wouldn't call this a pretty laptop, lol.

Also the G1P has a Go 7700, I'm not sure if you would call this pretty either, but I see your point about DX10 Nvidia cards for more of ASUS laptops.

Only time can tell, since ASUS decides on what GPU to use, plus it is really hard to tell which GPU exerts more heat, draws more power, etc etc. The best way to tell is to get an A8ja and A8jm with the same specs and do a battery life and heat/noise test on them.

Right now the G1 with the Go 7700 gets roughly 2+ hours of battery life, the V1J is yet to be released and it will be interesting to see the battery life, heat dissipation, but note, the V1J battery is larger, more capacity.

I doubt it. Currently the NVidia GeForce 8800 is the only DX 10 capable part, and those things are as big as a boat (and put out enough heat to pretty much bake my office). It'll be a while before someone puts DX 10 in a notebook.
