I need an advice on buying m1710, please!!!

hi guys,

I'm thinking about buying m1710 before xmass. I know that probably next gen, dx10 ready laptops are around the corner, but I have my old xps2 and it's hight time to sell it before it totally looses it's value.
I don't want to buy the best of the bests couse I can't afford it, but there are two sellers on that forum, Balhzar and jburdsall that offer good prices and here comes the question:

is it better to buy m1710 with cpu 2.0 and gpu 7950 (both 2gb of ram) or maybe the one with cpu 2.33 and gpu 7900?

I need your advice, guys!

thanks

Depends on what you use it for. But my guess is you want to game on it, so you'll be more than fine with the 2.0 and 7950GTX. It's not worth the cost of the faster CPU (some may argue the 7950 isn't worth it over the 7900 either though).

yeah, it's mainly for gaming...
thanks!

Better video card is definetly better than a faster CPU.

Yep, would suggest the 7950 over the faster CPU, in reality the difference in CPU speed will be marginal, however over time you'll see that the graphics card will help expand the life of your system.

The CPU are also readily available.... It is easier to buy a retail CPU than to buy a graphics card from Dell Spare Parts in the future...

I'll throw something out there (yes he's considering buying from me). Those of you that the are saying that the 7950 is the way to go. As a general rule the better GPU is the way to go vs a faster CPU true. But when you can get the faster CPU and basically for same GPU (7900GTX) for a great price (well under retail) why wouldn't you jump on the opportunity. I can send you guys a few reviews that clearly say the 7950's are not that much beter that the 7900GTX's. Just thought I'd add to this conversation.

I agree as a general rule the better GPU is best for gaming vs the CPU but in this case the differences are so minimal and you can get the faster CPU for the cost of the lower CPU why wouldn't you jump on it.

The difference between the 2.0 and the 2.33 is marginal at best. Difference between the 7900 and 7950 are about the same. You have to determine which is the easier upgrade for you in the long run.
You also need to check how much time is left on the warranties on the 7900 Lappy

Go for the 2.33ghz CPU with the 7900GTX. You can OC the GTX to stock 7950 speeds, and if you voltmod it to 7950 power specs, you can go even further. No matter how you slice it up, the 7950 is a 7900GTX getting a bit more power and higher clock speeds, of which you can set the 7900 GTX to safely run at.

Better yet, buy my e1705 i put a 7900 GTX and 2 gig of ram in, and save over 1000 instead of buying an m1710. Full config is in the FS section if your actually interested.

Nice setup, but isn't there some problem with the 7900GTX in the E1705, such as no bios that is fully utilizing it yet?

Nope, not with mine at least. As far as i can tell it performs right on par with an m1710 with a GTX. I will point out though that i dont believe the e1705 A01 revision supports the GTX.

Ahh I know it all too well, especially when it comes to the computer industry....things are changing so fast, that unless your Paris Hilton, you won't ever have the best for ever.

are there any news about dx10 dell laptop?
Nothing but speculation. Is say a good time to expect them is next summer just in time for the new college year, or possibly even later and in time for the holidays...but..just speculation.

I'm not sure of the actual date that Santa Rosa is released but with that, people seem to be saying Dell may release a 8800go in the new system. Along with some other goodies
