XGL/Beryl - Edgy - No effects...

Hi

Well I installed Ubuntu edgy 6.10. I also Installed XGL/Beryl according to this guide
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:E...eryl_.28ATI.29

When I reboot and switch to my xgl session, I don't see any effects...In fact it looks more like Windows 98....

When I go into my system preferences i see Beryl settings manager and the emerald theme manager. I explored and checked all the settings in the beryl manager....

Anyone have a solution to this problem?

I agree, I don't think compiz is ideal for laptops. And people don't understand why macbooks get so hot... These gpu stressing effects just make your laptop hotter, louder and shorten battery life. I actually like using beryl on my desktop because I don't have to worry about those things.

Hopefully AMD's GPU+CPU chips will make these types of effects more useful on laptops.

All depends. If you've got a decent Nvidia GPU with the Nvidia driver, the CPU usage is actually very minor (there are some effects that are more stressful than others though).
The code seems to exploit the GPU nicely (in other words)... for most things...

Agreed, with the Nvidia driver, CPU usage is very low on my system. Maybe 2-5% higher on average over not running the XGL effects.

Never installed Beryl but have previously installed compiz and loved the effects didnt notice much difference in use of resources.

In fact just about to install Ubuntu Dapper back onto my system after a short abscence and will probably instal compiz again.
