Notebook Processors

I'm going to college next year and need to buy a laptop. I've been looking at the different processors out there, and am wondering which is best to buy. I am usually a power user, I don't do a whole lot of gaming or anything, but I'm fairly obsessive about keeping things fast. I'm somewhat concerned by heat, but more so by short batterly life, I can think of needing to use my PC for 1:30 to 2:00 on occasion via battery, although if there is a way to use a spare battery that would be ok for those occasions, as long as it doesn't take time to switch batteries, i.e. both could be used at the same time. I'm not that concerned about weight for the most part, but don't really want anything that is a monstrosity, so like less than ten pounds or so should be fine.

Also, are there benchware tests for the different models that are specific to laptops, like a P4 3.0 Ghz vs. a Pentium M 1.7 Ghz vs. an AMD 64 3200+, I would really like to see those. Also, if it is possible for anybody to give a comparison between what I should expect running those different laptops and what I see on my current computer - Desktop Athlon XP 2200+ 512 MB DDR Dual Channel Ram, 60 GB 7200 RPM HD. 32 MB Geforce2 (yeah, that's antiquated) That would also be very helpful. Thanks for your help.

You seem to be a confirmed AMD user, so I'd suggest you look at the AMD powered notebooks such as the ones based on the MITAC machine, check out the Hypersonic AX6. There are other brands, the important thing is to go for the 128 MB Video systems.

If you are not in a hurry and you want the maximum, you could wait to see if Eurocom's Phantom which is supposed to feature an Athlon 64 FX processor becomes a reality.

As for benchmarks, there are zillions out there. Do a google on the comparison you want to check. Regarding the performance differential between your current desktop and something like the Hypersonic AX6 with a Athlon 64 3200+, the notebook with better than a 4 to 3 advantage will simply blow the desktop away. That assumes you get similar components such as the 60 GB, 7200 HD, which is standard.

The cyberpower 64 bit AMd sytem (same as hypersonic AX6) or the e-machines m6807/m6805 should be perfect for you.

for the AMD 64 bit systems, is there a plan for Microsoft to release a new version of 64 bit Windows XP in the near future? I'm looking at the system specs of the current Windows XP 64 bit edition, and it doesn't support many basic functions, such as DVD playing, CD burning, and notebook features such as power management. I know you can run 32 bit Windows XP using the Athlon chips, but since it would make sense that the chip would run much better in a native 64 bit environment, it is important to my decision whether this will actually happen or not
