Can you point me in the right direction?

hey guys im new to the the forums and also the world of laptops, so i was hoping you would be so kind as to offer some advice.

im going to college soon (yeah surprised me too) and need a laptop to take with me. i want it to be my link to the outside world, ie play games, music, movies, hopefully use tv. the only downside is i need to be able to take notes on it during class, about an hour and a half without being able to plug in. presumably the only program running would be a wp, but more like AIM and a cheesy yahoo game with it. What are my options with sager for doing this? I sent an email very similar to this one to sager but have yet to get a response, i figured you guys know youre stuff and are probably less biased.

also, anyone have any other ideas about companies? i refuse to buy a dell/hp/compaq/gateway type cookie cutter. ive checked out toshiba and alienware but sager seemed to fit me the best. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

for your needs a centrino seems to be the best bet.

If you are convinced to go the Sager route then here are your options :-

1] Sager NP-5680 with Dual battery Setup
2] Sager NP-8790 with the 12 Cell Battery

thanks for the quick response. i just went to check those out at the sager website and the 8790 really caught my eye. could i choose the 12cell battery and then buy a 3rd party tv tuner? ive only dealt with desktops so i know almost nothing about slots in a laptop. if that is possible, maybe the 3rd party would be better than the one provided with sager? also, i noticed you had ordered a sager 8790. did you go through sager or pctorque? one last thing- on the 5680 with the dual battery setup that means theyre both in at the same time right, or is there swapping involved?

a 3rd party TV Tuner is usually a USB device...Happauge makes good ones. Yes this will be better than the internal ones.

You can get the 8 cell and the tv tuner AND a 12 cell spare battery as well...

Hey, I am in the same boat as skooma_diver. I am going to college this fall and will need a laptop aswell. The Alienware Sentia looked like it would be a perfect choice but the graphics card is crap so I moved on to Sager. My only real concern is the noise level of a Sager 8890. Will this thing annoy other people in a classroom? I figure if I buy 2 batteries I should be good for a day, then recharge them at night. I have been lurking here for about 2 weeks and this is my first post. Here are some bananas!

Also, on the 5680, both of the batteries are hot swappable. So you could theoretically extend the battery life as long as you have spares for. I believe you can figure on about 1 hour per spare.

Also, as far as buying from a reseller like PCT or direct from SAGER, I resuggest going the reseller route. First of all, they usually have lower prices (yes, I know, this defies logic but SAGER would rather have you buy from a reseller as its a lot less messy for them) and secondly, if you have a problem (which can happen, though its rare) its better to have a reseller on your side than being just one little user among thousands and thousands. The reseller is also an additional resource and there's never too much help available.

You can also increase battery life by reducing the brightness of the screen. I heard you can squeeze some more life out of the batteries that way, plus it doesnt matter loads about screen brightness when you're only using Word or something to type notes.

haha tony glad im not the only one!

pctorque offers their 8790s with RAID. i use that to kill ants. i dont really want ants in my laptop. perhaps i should get this RAID? but if i get a 60gig 7200 hd i really dont think ill fill it up unless...no it still sounds like a waste. but maybe if you can explain to me what this is and why ill ever or never need it.

i would give bananas as well but they attract ants...

As far as long battery life and hauling around campus, the P4 Sager's really aren't meant for that. You need to find a Centrino/Pentium-M based system. Even an AMD64-M is a better choice when it comes battery usage. They do sell Centrino systems with ATi 9600 graphics in them, just a matter of hunting them down. That would seem to be the best bet for you. Ibuypower is one place... I don't know what type of customer service they provide.
