Acer Aspire 5600 Series Laptop Takes about 4 Minutes to Boot Up

Thread Starter
I recently bought an Acer Aspire 5600 series laptop. It worked fine for a week or two but now it is taking forever to boot up. I installed the following software on the laptop since I bought it.
(a) Microsoft Office 2003
(b) Quickbooks Pro 2006

I tried to do a Registry Check using the Registry Nechanic Software
I ran Spybot Search and Destroy software to correct any issues
I ran McAfee Virus Scan program
I have pretty much removed quite a bit of startup software. Here is how the msconfig looks.

Startup Selection Tab
--------------------------
Option "Selective Startup" is selected. Under that all the options are selected.

System.ini Tab
------------------
All the options listed are selected

Win.ini Tab
-------------
All the options are selected

Boot.ini Tab
---------------
It reads like this
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Services
----------
There are many services that seem to be in running status.

Startup
---------
ehtray
ntiMUI
IMJPMIG
IMScInst
TINTSETP
TINTSETP
igfxtray
hkcmd
igfxpers
Boot
ImageItEncrypt
winpatorl

What should I do to make my computer boot up fast? Please Help.

I should mention that my laptop when it boots up, the sound of windows loading sounds like a broken record. Perhaps it's part of the fact that system resources are being chewed up in something during the load time and the sound breaks. The computer works fine once it boots up and shuts down easily.

My 5672 never takes that long. Perhaps spyware? Run HijackThis and get one of the major antispyware groups to take a look

"sounds like a broken record" - it could be your hard drive starting to fail? Or something else, not sure.. where is the sound coming from?

Check hard drive transfer mode in Device Manager - IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
It should be "DMA Mode 5" or something like that.
If it reads "PIO Mode", there's the answer to the slow boot.

Is it sluggish after boot is finished too?

For reference, my 5672 primary is DMA 6 and secondary is DMA 2...

I never set that, it was that way from a fresh XP install.

Mine does take a long time to boot, but seems to run fine. There is a heck of a lot of apps that I have loading this machine down, but I just can't live without any of them.

I'd check into the services to see what they are and whether they need to be running all the time. Also, were the problem mine, I'd Google each startup item I didn't recognize. My own Windows machine only has about half that many startup items. Good luck.

God, that's EXACTLY what has me going crazy all day. Mine just started doing the same thing today. garbled windows music and very very slow boot. everything is slow.
Can you tell me what the solution is? I've tried everything.

Solved! Go into device manager and unistall the driver for primary ide drive.Reboot and windows will reinstall the driver. As the previous poster pointed out the drive has to be in dma 5 mode and mine was stuck in pio. How it got in pio mode I do not know but uninstalling the driver was the only fix. Thanks!
