No doubt the AW will cost more than the Dell and I've also read on this thread that there are a number of people that have had as much problem with AW quality as with Dell, so do you think this is a reasonable alternative? Please don't think I am challenging your selection, I'm not. I'm just trying to fully explore your reasoning for considering AW as a worthy alternative. I think I'm pretty convinced that their response to the XPS will be a capable system... at a higher price. I just don't want to spend more money and end up in the same situation.
thanks for your reply.
I'm not convinced the Alienware with the 9700 will be more than the dell, but it will be real close. I lurked on the AW forum since 1/1/04 and was sold on the product until dell released the 9700 card. That interested me a great deal. After testing out the XPS for the short span that I used it, I really think the 9700 card is something special. Had AW had the 9700 card first, I would not even considered the XPS, even though I've refered dell to friends and family for the last 10 years because most of my friend and family are not technically compitent when it comes to computers.
The thing that disillusioned me with dell was their Technical and Customer support. When I considered AW, I actually went so far as placing phone calls to their Technical Support (without a laptop). I had a technician on the line within 18 seconds (on 2 occasions), only to mention that I wanted to test their support. Dell took 30 minutes+ even with a service # from a purchased laptop.
I do not feel I will need a great deal of technical support with my knowledge, unless I recieve flawed hardware. But that speaks miles in my book. I think the screen on the AW gives up a little to the dell, only if the dell screen is not flawed by what is mentioned in this forum.
In a nutshell, from what I've read about AW in the forums, and on technical reviews, I think they are the right one for me. If Voodoo were cheaper, I would look more at their product. Sager is a little too cumbersome weight wise for my interest. So this really leaves me with Alienware.
As I mentioned before, I will not get the Alienware until they have the 9700, but my humble opinion says that it is just around the corner.
The fact the AW has not released the 9700 when everyone else has tells me one very important thing, they are doing very thorough testing on their product.
