I was faced with the same issue on my last laptop purchase.
I was getting a REALLY good deal (so to speak) for a mac book pro - 2Ghz, 1GB single dimm, 256mb video, 3 year warranty, for under 1700 shipped. And I have been raised on unix, so no problem there either.

Close call, but I chose to not get it. Reasons:
1.Heat (maybe apple has fixed it by now).
2.Display resolution. A higher resolution looks soooo much better, and its a 15.4 screen too.

Looks were not an issue (I do not particulalrly like the MBP look, dont dislike it either).
I finally got a dell, a 17" for roughly the same price, could not be happier. It dual boots linux+windows.

Heh heh...Asus...I like Asus...

I like the quality and engineering that goes into the mac laptops. But on pre-intel ones, they were like sealed boxes. You had to completely disassemble them to get at the component you wanted to replace....so many screws of varying sizes and finish...Very technician unfriendly....I think I still have some of the micro-screws embeded in the callusses of my feet...

The new macbook pros, I haven't done much on. Just a memory upgrade or 2. Simple panel removal affair....

On windows I end up staring at the hourglass for long periods of time. On OSX, I stare at the beachball for long periods of time.

Windows? OSX? All made in Taiwan! (to parody a certain movie)
