Asus G1 / Asus A8JS / Compal HGL30

Thread Starter
I have been contemplating fora nice laptop since a long time but now this christmas I hope to buy one for a good deal. I want something that oozes quality first and then style. my other laptop is a compaq R4000 desktop replacement.

compal is the cheapest of the lot. Also has fingerprint reader (Dunno how much it would be useful to me but adds to the wow factor)

Asus A8JS is the smallest and lightweight and also the best bang for the buck. Bluetooth may be missing on the model I may buy though. My R4000 is a reall heavy machine.

Asus G1. No words. It rocks in one word. the specification is just awesome for the price but also costs the highest of the three. I love the looks too but its 15.4 and maybe heavy. also price maybe an issue.

Which of the three will fit my needs. Lots of movies and music, lots of internet, adequate gaming but high-level gaming.

I have just been through this conundrum.
Check this link to my thread, my purchase was the Asus A8Js, I didn't consider the G1 as 'fancy gaming' isn't what i had in mind.

I did want a core 2 duo, very strong graphics, dvi and bluetooth essential (you can get bluetooth easily if you want it ...) This monster won't have good battery life on a 6 cell battery so i bought a spare.

The HGL 30 was very tempting with that big long lasting battery, bluetooth and DVI. I almost wish i went for it.... My Ferrari gets poor battery life and that has always bothered me, but the Geoforce Go 7700 is a big step up from go 7600 (but step down in battery life, i have been told about -45 mins...)

Hope this helps.

P.S.

My A8Js arrives tomorrow

a8js if you can afford it
compal hgl30 if your budget is tight
the G1 is the poor mans dell xps m1710, you know the whole "bling" factor and all

Though the G1 will probably have a better build quality than the dell, who cares if your main concern is gaming, the dell is better at that.

The only reason to get the G1 is if you want the bigger screen size over the A8Js or you like wowing people with a pretty laptop.

You think asus who managed to put the 7700 in a 14 inch notebook, would step it up, and put something like a 7900 into a 15.4 inch notebook. The G1 is slightly disappointing from a hardware standpoint.

Here's a review of the G1.

Sorry, how? if you can find a 512mb dedicated 7700 / core 2 duo t7200 / 2gb-667 ram / 160gb 5400rpm HD for cheaper then 1799 , enlighten me. cheapest i could find was hp9000 for 100$ less. Of course it doesn't look half as good, have nearly as much features/extras, doesn't come with a bag/gaming mouse, isn't advertised for gaming like the g1. edit: i really think asus should have just put in an 7200rpm harddrive to shut up the idiots who don't know anything (the 160gb 5400 = 80gb 7200 in performance). Also to the poster above me, a 7900 in a 15.4" notebook would be extremely tough, they would need to take away from the "sleekness" of the g1 in order to do it (which isn't worth it)

I also think the G1 is has awesome hardware for the price, though I would personally like it better if it didn't have the green lights.

wow thanks for not reading my entire post, did you not see me say how the a8js is the best choice, unless you want a bigger screen?

Sticking the 7700 in a 14 inch laptop is quite a feat
then
Sticking the 7700 in a 15.4 laptop isn't as impressive

Do you understand know why I say the G1 isn't as impressive from a hardware standpoint?

@mitcity22, i'm sure you can disable the lights

I have had the R4000 which is bulky. What is the weight of the g1 and A8JS?

Also Compal has a fingerprint reader which I dont need and A8JS has a slightly better gpu which doesnt really matter between the two. which among the two makes better sense?
the hgl30 and a8js are both good 14 inch laptops

go for the hgl if your budget is tight, if not get the a8js since it has more pixels and a better video card

I really wish you would use the search:
G1 ~ 6.84 lbs.
A8Js ~ 5.4 lbs

well I have only the A8Js in hand

My A8js just arrived. I am afraid the only comparisons i can make are with the Acer Ferrari 3200 (not wide screen 15'4)i I already own and my brother Dell Inspiron E1505(wide screen 15.4). I will photograph them all side by side. I haven't had a chance to field test the A8Js yet, all i can say is that it is pretty! (Bear in mind i own one of the red Ferraris, so that is some compliment. I was given the impression that i was going to get some big 'blocky Dell type 'Laptop' Not so, it is pretty, sleek, small and now i can see why a larger battery isn't possible, the battery position is kind of inside the notebook. The HGL30's is at the back, so they can make it bigger and stick out a bit. Other comparisons are that the screen viewing angles are not good, but i use the damn thing, not half a dozen admiring girls, so who cares?' My ferrari has poor viewing angles also, but i still managed to get about 4 people to view pictures on it out in the field, so that is good enough. The 14.1' widescreen is exactly the same width as my 15.4' standard screen on the Ferrari, which is great because it fits perfectly in my leather Samsonite case designed for 15'4 standard spec notebooks. The screen has 1.5' less height than my Ferrari, but i do a lot of side by side work (photoshop and excel) so i can't wait, i have also seen a LOT of DVDs, so this will be an improvement, even on a smaller screen As to weight? I don't have a set of scales to put them all on, but the A8Js 'feels' much lighter than the Ferrari, a mixture of genuine weight difference and smaller form. Both my brother and myself were convinced it was 2 pounds lighter, but I can't see how. The Inspiron with extra battery seems like a leviathon.... Pictures Just realised i can't put pictures on your thread. here is the link to my thread, i will put them on now, hope they help...http://www.notebookforums.com/post25...ml#post2500141

you probably meant 15" for non-widescreen. i don't think they come in 15.4" 4:3 ratio.

Slght change in plans.

the plain jane design of A8JS lost out to G1. Also HGL didnt appeal much.

SO at present I am looking at

1. Asus G1
2. Apple Macbook pro 15.4
3. Sony vaio SZ.

which among the three is the best looking and best built laptop? I have not used a mac before. What should I be watching out for?
why would you want to game on a mac?

sz has the nvidia 7400

go with the asus g1, or just buy some sort of skin to cover the a8js

I love my Macs, but I'm not a gamer. If there happens to be an Apple Store near enough so that you can drop in, you should do so and check out the machine in person. Can't think of a better way to find out if it would suit you.

If there is no store nearby, stop by the Apple forums. Many posters there own both Mac and Windows machines, are gamers, and can probably give you good advice.

I am not an extreme gameer. I play wolf: enemy territory these days and my ATI xpress 200m handles it just fine. Also I play nfs which again runs fine.

WHy I am tempted towards the mac is because I want to learn a new OS and I can dual boot.

sony seems to be the best one out there but would I have compatibility issues with windows vista with the 7400? I am afraid coz ati doesnt support my xpress 200m in the new catalyst drivers within just 1 year.

please help, christmas is near.
No, the 7400 probably won't run Vista Aero very well. Go for the Mac if you want to learn something new... try out one of those new Macbook Pros with the lit keyboard... those look FANTASTIC. If you're just planning on playing those older games, the Mac could run them fine.

I would suggest a few things.

1) Go to your local Apple store and play with the Macbook Pro for a while, get a feel for it, you will definitely appreciate the experience you recieve while using something so unique.

Sure the MAC OSX is tempting, plus you can you can dual boot, Bootcamp or Parallels.

For your gaming needs of course use Bootcamp, a few things to consider is that the MBP is expensive, despite the amazing specs, the initial cost of it is quite high.

2) Check out the ASUS G1, it is basically one of the best 15.4" competative performance laptop out there on the market, it is cheaper, great specs and the mighty Go 7700 512mb. More and more owners of the G1 are expressing them selves so check that out. One of the big difference will be weight, and size and quite possibly battery life, so also factor those into your decision.

3) The ASUS V1JP is another laptop i would consider if i'm looking for highend laptops, the V1JP is a 15.4" laptop, that seems to cater to business users while offering very good performance. The GPU is an X1700, features such as, fingerprint reader, mini dvi port, WSXGA+ screen, multi-bay, spillproof keyboard, webcam and the optional docking station. This laptop has almost everything one may want in a laptop and much flexibility, but it is expensive just like the MBP.
