No sound on 200ARC

My gateway notebook sound card gave up on me, I have a gateway 200ARC notebook. Now, I checked with gateway and they say it is an onboard soundcard and it would cost me $299 + tax to get it repaired.

I am wondering if it is worth that much and if there is anything I can do on my own. The OS doesnt even see the soundcard anymore and it just conked off one fine day.

The other alternative I am considering is a PCMCIA or external USB soundcard for notebooks, would these work? Can I use the internal speakers somehow if I get an external soundcard?

I can put a cable from the external cards line out to line in to try and make the speakers work.....but sounds like an endless cycle to me as it probably would just try and output to line out again.

An external solution should work, but if the on board sound chip is screwed, you won't be able to use the internal speakers.
