Asus A8Js Tweaking Guide (Again...)

Hi Folks

I will make this shorter, as I spent over an hour typing this thread up this morning, the thread subsequently dissapeared #

Questions:
1) Has anyone a tweaking guide for both the CPU and the GPU, so that i can save a bit of battery life.

2) I have to swop my fast HDD back out of my old Ferrari in preparation for putting it in the new Asus. If i put the old 4200rpm HDD back in the Ferrari (it has been reformated and partitions removed) and use the original restore discs, will I have XP back on it ready for sale. OR do i have to migrate the Operating System back off the 7200rpm HDD using Acronis?

3)Same question for taking the 5400rpm HDD out of the Asus and swapping in the 7200rpm?

4) How do i make a copy of tweaked settings, so that if in the future, i want to restore a bloated HDD, I can restore it to 'tweaked settings' rather than to Asus standard specs?

5) Finally, has anyone designed a sticky-outey 9 cell battery for the A8Js, so i don't have to shut down and swap to my second battery all the time (err.. as in swap batteries every TWO hours....!!! )

Thanks,

RD

P.S. My A8Js arrives tomorrow. Yay!

Well, I don't know much about data migration, so I can't help you with your hard drive questions, but for limiting power consumption, set Nvidia's Powermizer to "maximum power savings" when on battery power. You can also undervolt your CPU, but... Intel seems to have locked the lowest multiplier, i.e. the one that's in use most often, for Core & Core 2 Duo processors, so undervolting can save you some power when the CPU is under load, it's not going to help you when it's idle. But, that said, you can use either RM Clock or Notebook Hardware Control to undervolt.

Oh Pants!

I just realised that the 7200rpm dive in my Ferrari 3200 is a PATA not a SATA! I checked, but i must have misread. So i can't put it in my A8Js. Had i known that, i would have had BTOTech install a 7200rpm drive as stock (instead of going for the cheaper 5400rpm....) Now i am really annoyed.

I don't suppose that someone on the forum has accidently bought a SATA 7200rpm when they need a PATA 7200rpm? We could do a straight swop...

you could add it as a "want to buy" to your thread in the For Sale/Want to Buy section

either you can do what rickster said or make sure the file size is small enough to attach. If your pics are too big, they won't upload due to the size limit.

For whatever reason when i was writing on this thread, i was not given the option to add images. It says at the bottom of this screen now, as i write 'you may not post attachments' I have only posted one in 2 years (this morning) so that seems a bit extreme...

Ok rickster i will dig them out now.
God i am running between 3 notebooks and a desktop now. Gaaahh!

10 minutes.....

OK went to image shack and have some links for pictures.
Can someone tell me why i can't attach image files directly at notebook forum please?

Below is most of my reply in someone else's thread, it may be of some use here. It is not a review.
i agree there are too many 'quite nice' reviews, with no terms of reference.

My A8js just arrived. I am afraid the only comparisons i can make are with the Acer Ferrari 3200 (not wide screen 15'4)i I already own and my brother Dell Inspiron E1505(wide screen 15.4). I will photograph them all side by side.
I haven't had a chance to field test the A8Js yet, all i can say is that it is pretty! (Bear in mind i own one of the red Ferraris, so that is some compliment. I was given the impression that i was going to get some big 'blocky Dell type 'Laptop' Not so, it is pretty, sleek, small and now i can see why a larger battery isn't possible, the battery position is kind of inside the notebook. The HGL30's is at the back, so they can make it bigger and stick out a bit.

Other comparisons are that the screen viewing angles are not good, but i use the damn thing, not half a dozen admiring girls, so who cares?' My ferrari has poor viewing angles also, but i still managed to get about 4 people to view pictures on it out in the field, so that is good enough.

The 14.1' widescreen is exactly the same width as my 15.4' standard screen on the Ferrari, which is great because it fits perfectly in my leather Samsonite case designed for 15'4 standard spec notebooks. The screen has 1.5' less height than my Ferrari, but i do a lot of side by side work (photoshop and excel) so i can't wait, i have also seen a LOT of DVDs, so this will be an improvement, even on a smaller screen

As to weight? I don't have a set of scales to put them all on, but the A8Js 'feels' much lighter than the Ferrari, a mixture of genuine weight difference and smaller form. Both my brother and myself were convinced it was 2 pounds lighter, but I can't see how. The Inspiron with extra battery seems like a leviathon....

A8Js 5.4lbs
Acer Ferrari 3200 7lbs
Dell Inspiron Big, ugly and heavy......possibly 9lbs (but 4.5hours battery life...)
