5680 sager Debian direct rendering

I am having a problem with direct rendering. I have downloaded the ati drivers, have them installed and best to my knowledge working. I have used the the ati config file, and X runs, with no direct rendering. Anyone have a problem like this or a solution?

BTW.. I am running a kernel 2.6.4 debian kde3.2

What does it say in your X log? (At the point it tries to initialize dri)
